As of last week, even if you have the following Windows updates, you may not see the Windows 10 Upgrade Icon in the taskbar:

    For Windows 7:

    KB3035583

    KB2952664

    For Windows 8.1:

    KB3035583

    KB2976978

    I found a workaround here:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...10-but-i/848b5cce-958b-49ae-a132-a999a883265b

    Long story short,

Download this file and run it as administrator then follow the instructions. Using the quick method, I immediately saw the upgrade notification icon:

    Download Windows 10 Upgrade Fix

Just go to Programs and Features, view installed updates, and uninstall the updates mentioned:

    For Windows 7:

    KB3035583

    KB2952664

    For Windows 8.1:

    KB3035583

    KB2976978

then reboot after that and check for Windows updates again, when you see them, right click on them and HIDE them ;)

you need to right click on the BAT file, then choose the quick method.

If that didn't work, try the long method, both methods worked for me but the long method takes about 30 mins for the icon to appear and you need to reboot after doing it.

    I just got it:

Check the original post, I included the screenshots

it's not instant, give it 30 mins

If still after 30 mins you don't see the icon, do this, quoted from the official Microsoft Forum:

    1) Did you ensure you have those 2 KB Updates?

    2) Please reboot and give your system another 30 mins

    3) Please ensure that the icon is not hidden in the hidden taskbar icons perhaps

Ok please report back after rebooting and waiting another 30 mins and also ensure to click on the hidden system tray icons to ensure the icon is not there but hidden.

I personally don't want to upgrade but I did want to reserve the upgrade just to get the upgrade key for *if* Microsoft ever fixes this buggy OS.

The only reason that temps me to upgrade is DX12 support and more importantly to have UEFI boot because with Windows 7, it takes like 25 seconds for me to book to the desktop because Windows 7 doesn't play with PCIe SSDs well during boot up initialization. I have an Intel 750 PCIe SSD and while its super fast, the slow boot is killing me.

NP, I am not telling anyone not too upgrade. I even hope M$ wakes up and satisfies their consumers. I just think it funny to see CMD windows when pople get all scared thinking about a terminal window.

Windows 10 deliver about 2.8% lower performance in 3DMark physics and Cinebench R15. Same trend as from win7 to Win8. This means that the processor deliver worse CPU performance in pure CPU benchmark test with win 10, between 5 and 10% lower than the old man win 7. I tink the same will be with ssd/hdd bench tests also. Talk about going forward... These tests are done by a very "powerful" Intel Core i5-5200U.

I am one of those that want that icon removed. Deleting KB3035583 worked.

    Easy.

    Go to Tray Icons
    Click 'Customise'
Find 'GWX' in the list of icons
Choose 'Hide icon and notifications' from drop down menu
    Click 'OK'

    Done :)

This wasn't working correctly for a few weeks - I had to do this each time I restarted (even after accepting the 'free upgrade'). It must have been fixed though, as it's now properly hidden.

I don't know that you'll just get a key, you'll have to install the whole darn OS and you have another year to get the free upgrade. I'm in no rush.
