There are certain Vista updates I do not want to install, such as Defender definitions or spam filters for Outlook/Live mail...
When I check for updates, and choose to "show available updates", I uncheck them and click "install" (to install just the wanted ones) or "cancel" (if all were unwanted).
However, on the next check for updates, the ones I unchecked show again... how do I get rid of them?

I don't think we have any control over how WU does things. thats why its good to do it manually like you are doing. I, like yourself don't trust MS to do the updates automatically. Yes I have noticed that things come back. But we all know that MS generally thinks they know whats best for the consumer.. although they are learning the hard way that lisnening is important.. eg.. windows seven.

In XP when you select "advanced options" or something and unchecked everything, there was an option at the bottom that said "do not prompt me to install these updates again" or something along those lines.
Is .Vista not like this anymore? -
I remember there's an option that could let you hide the update, try right clicking on it. I don't have any update that need to be done so could not confirm it for you.

You should have the option in Vista to go to Control Panel > Windows Update > Change Settings and then choose how you want Windows to behave.

You can right-click on an update and choose to hide it, it will then no longer be presented to you for consideration. If it does come back, it is a different situation and needs to be reconsidered.
How to skip some Vista updates?
