My laptop has a light sensor on the front and whenever it isn't bright in the room the screen dims whether it's on battery power or if it's plugged in. Is there anyway to stop this? I have looked around the power settings but there's nothing. Thanks!

Is there a light sensor utility? If so then disable it.

Yeah. How to disable it depends on your laptop. On my Dell, the key combination Fn-leftarrow toggles the ambient light sensor. It may be a different key combo on your laptop. If you can't find it, you can also look in the BIOS settings, or check your computer's manual (which you might be able to find online using Google).

besides that, there is an option in win7 to dim the screen a bit after some idle time. i guess it's not that, but one never knows, and it doesn't hurt to have it in here.

I'm assuming you're using Win 7 here, as you didn't tell us, but if that's the case, type 'services' into the start search, run as administrator, then right click "Adaptive Brightness" >Properties>Disable

    That should sort it.

Thanks guys for the help! I have an hp 8510w running vista x64. I read the manual and it doesn't say anything about how to disable it. Could I somehow go into the registry or device manager and disable it myself?

I'm still not sure if he's referring to hardware or software? In any event, these types of things should always be connected to toggle keys.

Have you looked through the BIOS to see if there is a toggle for that piece of hardware. If so, then simply disable it there. An alternative would be to find out if its listed as a system device in device manager. You could disable its entry so Windows ignores its existence. That may work too.
