You can use the files and settings transfter wizard wizard which can be found at Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Files and Settings
    Transfer wizard.

I've never used it though, so I don't know how helpful the wizard woul be. I personally think the easiest way is to use an external hard drive. I think every other methord is a bi of a headache.

if you don't have an external Hard Drive, you can always burn data on to DVDs.

Networking your computers together is really easy and probably the best way.

I'm guessing you are looking for the term Ethernet Crossover cable, which is a cable for connecting both machines together via the Ethernet port and thereby establishing a 100Mbps/1Gbps network, accross which you can transport files.
The quality and length of the crossover cable will determine the speed of transfer, although 100Mbps is more than fast enough for most users.

If you want to do it wirelessly, you will need to puchase wireless adaptors for the computers which do not have one, and then establish an ad-hoc 54mbps wireless network through which you can transfer files.

Yeah, like Lil Mayz said, Files and Settings Transfer Wizard is probably what you want. I've used it before and it works pretty well. You can select whether you want to just transfer your files to the new computer, or if you also want your user settings transfered as well. You will need to have both machines set up on a network (can see each other), or have a direct cable connection. If you start the Wizard, it will tell you all about this and how to do it.

    Good luck!

You have to make one of them have a folder that's shared over a network, and then put all the files/folders you'd like to share in that folder. You can have a shared folder on each computer, but then you'd be forgetting which one has the file you are looking for since you'd have 2 places to check, so you'll need to choose which computer would have the shared files. If the computer with the bigger HDD is the one that you use most often, then put it there - since the computer with the shared files has to be on and connected to the network in order for the other computer to access it. If they are different computers, then the best place for the shared folder depends on the size of these files and how often you'll need to access them.

I would just use the step by step instructions, follow the Files and Settings transfer wizard.

Don't know if there's a guide, but it goes like this. Go to the computer that's gonna have the shared folder, go to my network places, and there should be a link on the left-hand-side bar to "set up a home network". Go to that and follow the step-by-step instructions. It'll ask you if you want to share files, if you want to share printers, and to name your network and your computer. Do that, I think it has to restart, and then it asks what you want to do next, just click "I'm done". Then, go to the other computer, go to "set up home network", I think you have to type in the same network name (or maybe it finds it on its own, I don't remember), name the computer, ask if you want to share files/printers (say no), reboot. Then, if you go to my network places (I think, I'm on a Mac now so I can't check) you'll be able to see the shared folder on the other computer. On the computer with the shared folder, you can access that folder by going to my network places. It'll also show up if you go to my computer in Windows Explorer. It looks like an icon with a hand holding it. I know it's a little jumbled, but I hope it makes sense. Post back if you have more questions!

Well the computers have to be connected somehow either through a router or direct link. If you go through a router, you can use it as wireless for your laptop but I would highly recommend using wires because it is much faster.
