You know how if your network cable is connected to your laptop when its off or sleep or hibernate, it still has lights on and the communication light flickers cause theres communication. How do you turn this off? that is, if the comp is off, it should be OFF

That will definitely happen if your laptop is only in sleep mode. However, if it's in hibernation, that activity should not be occurring.

The light is on indicates a connection, doesn't mean there is any activities. Only when it blinks.

It blinks sometimes. Plus theres also less energy efficient. How does one go about turning it off. And not just the lights too. When the comp is off, I want it to be OFF

On desktop computers, even when the power supply is off there is still power going to the motherboard. NIC cards are powered at all times, which is why you see lights when power is off. If you unplug the computer, the lights will stop.

On a laptop, when the computer is off, the same thing happens. If the battery/power cable is installed, there is power going to the motherboard and therefore power going to the NIC. However, I've never tested that so I cannot say that is true with 100% accuracy. You can go to the device manager and make sure that the computer is allowed to turn off the NIC to conserve power, and that the computer cannot wake on LAN or respond to magic packets.

The amount of energy required is quite small. I really wouldn't worry about it.

You'll probably have to go into the BIOS and disable the ability to use Wake on LAN, and/or go into the properties configuration for your NIC and disable the ability of the NIC to turn the computer on.

its not really power thats the problem. I will only entertain the idea the comp being completely off when its surposed to

It is i've tried it. Widndows off. network cable in. lights.

If you read my post, you'll understand why the computer is never truly off.

Again, if you read my post and Shyster1's post, you might be able to turn it off.

If you really want it off, disable it in the device manager. Windows will no longer know there is a NIC installed, and the NIC will no longer respond to any network traffic.

You can manually turn it off under Windows Mobility Center or turn the switch off in your laptop prior to sleeping.

I don't believe there is a switch for the internal NIC, just for the wifi.
