In the start menu every application which is new or has never been opened from the Start menu is highlighted. Is there a way to change some setting so that this does not happen?

Right click on the Start orb--> Properties-->Start Menu tab-->Customize-->In the selection box scroll down until you see the 'Highlight newly installed programs'. Uncheck the check box and click OK-->Apply.
