    Hey guys,

My brother gave my dad an iPod 60GB and there are hundreds of his songs on it. Apparently Apple doesn't like people putting songs from the ipod onto the computer, only the other way around. Either way, I just copied them all into my hard drive from the ipod via USB.

I can open them all in WMP10 and all the names of the songs are listed along with all the info that goes with a song....

Here's my problem: All the filenames in My Music are wierd, like KGND.mp3 and BQUY.mp3.

I tried doing "Process Media Information Now" but it goes to 3% and stops. Is there any way I can have it update the filenames for all these songs?
(I remember my old computer took about an hour but updated all the song names with album pictures, names, etc.)

You need an external program like PodManager to actually take the music off of the iPod or else the tags and names will come out scrambled if you just did a straight copy.

In WMP, on the Library tab in options, check off "Rename Music Files using Rip Music Settings". Check the settings on the Rip tab under filenames to make sure it's what you want.

I've used MediaMonkey in the past and although it was a little tedious to get working, it retrieved all of the ID3 Tag data, renamed all of the files, and even threw in some album art for my 2000+ song collection. I'd recommend you take a look at it.

I use The Godfather. Lots of options to rename, copy tags, organize etc.

you can apparently use iPods are external hard drives. Set the iPod up as an external HDD so you access the iPod through My Computer. Copy the files over to itunes and then edit the ID3 tags.

I'm assuming the music on the iPod was already tagged, thus he isn't exactly looking for a tagger. He's just looking for a program to get the mp3s or whatever format the songs are in off of the iPod without having the names scrambled.

I eventually got it. I just copied them from the ipod directly, and then itunes updates the names when the ipod was connected, kinda wierd but whatever. Oh and when I uninstalled itunes, it decided to take all my windows items too so none of my icons worked at the computer wouldnt shut off. I had to reformat because windows was all messed! Thank God for partitioning :)

Easily fixed... Use the latest version of Winamp...it supports IPods, is quicker to load than Itunes, uses less memory than Itunes, and allows you to drag and drop files to and from your IPod...

I did exactly that, and it worked PERFECTLY! Took about an hour to copy 2GB of music, about 500 songs, all MP3's. Worked better then doing a straight-copy and having to rename for about 4 hours.

Here is the instructions on how to do it..

    1. Download WinAmp 5.541 from www.winamp.com
    2. Install it, uncheck all the add-ons, start WinAmp and plug your iPod in.
    3. Go to the Music section of your iPod, it's on the lower right side of WinAmp
    4. Click one of the songs, Select all (CTRL+A), and then right click and click "Copy to Local Media"
    5. Go to the option on the lower left side that says Portables.
    6. Enjoy! BTW, it copies into My Music then "Unknown Artist - Unknown Album"

    Thanks! :)

    Hope it helps!

If you need to update the filenames, use MP3Tag. YOu can load up the songs and update the filenames from the ID3 tags.

Works like a charm, and its free.
