i don't think the software would do this, in most cases anyways, make sure you have a DVD optical drive, if you do and it doesnt work there could be a problem with it. You might have to replace it.

We need more info to help you...
a. what drive do you have? you can find out from device manager
b. what happens when you try to play a dvd? with what software?
c. did you try playing dvds before you reformatted?
d. can you play cds?
e. do dvds that you try to play match the region of the drive?
Malia -
You probably need some kind of DVD decoder. Fill out Malia's questionnaire and we can further help.

You probably need to install a DVD program such as VLC. Your notebook should have come with a DVD program. My DV4000 came with Intervideo WinDVD, so imagine yours probably did too. Install it and it should work.

HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4244n. that is the drive
b. what happens when you try to play a dvd? with what software?
with inter actual dvd it says that playback failed because of screen resolution and color amounts.
c. did you try playing dvds before you reformatted?
i never played dvds before
d. can you play cds?
yes
e. do dvds that you try to play match the region of the drive?
all the regions are good.

It sounds like you just need to make sure you have the correct video driver installed from HP. If this is already done, make sure your display settings are correct -- resolution: 1280x800, color depth 24-bit. If you are using the generic VGA driver you will get that error message... same if your color depth or resolution are set too low.
Oh, yeah and the Interactual player is for playing PC-specific content founf on certain DVD movie disks. Use the main WinDVD software for standard playing. -
Try reinstalling windows media player.
