CURSE YOU BILL GATES AND YOUR ****PY OS
-
-
What happened? Did you have a Virus?
-
nope
i was clean
no virus, no worm, NOTHING WRONG, except WINDOWS, i checked with a virus scan and all that jazz. nothing was damaged, it was just a HUGE waste of my time to put it all back the way it was... they also wiped out my custom MSN smilies!! i had like 200 -
Ok just chill. This has already happened to my sister with her old Toshiba after a hibernate, I tried and tried to see what happened, system restore and everything. No luck.
-
So you turned off your computer and leave. You can back, booted up, and everything was wiped out?
Interesting -
yeah, as i said, nothing was damaged, i just had to waste like an hour to put everything back, this is an OFFICIAL COMPLAINT TOWARDS MICROSOFT, and a warning to switch to linux while you still can. ALL HAIL THE PENGUIN!

What version of Windows Zedman? If it is XP, I must say that XP has been extremely solid in its performance for me. In fact I've never had the dreaded BSOD of previous versions. And other members in Forums I read are also of the same opinion.
Of course you must follow a few rules like:
1. You absolutely must have an uptodate virus program running.
2. You absolutely must have a firewall if you go on the internet.
3. You absolutely must have anti-spyware programs - yes, more than one - available to run regularly.
4. You should have a good registry cleaner program. -

My WinXp isn't allowed to hibernate. I find that it doesn't want to ever wake back up and makes a bunch of errors. I've also found Xp to be more stable with auto-updates, indexing, and system restore disabled...but that's just me.
-
And Linux may be more stable as a whole, but the first time you do something like boot into a different runlevel trying to fix or configure something seemingly simple, accidentally type in an incorrect character, and end up with an unrecoverable system you'll be cursing just as hard. Simply put, no operating system is perfect.
My 2ยข. -
I like XP. No gripes here. I am sorry to hear about that though.
-
i forgot to mention that it is xp, and i did update regularly, and i do have firewall, antispyware, alll that stuff, and im not starting any flame wars. jeez, when was the last time one could post something and someone wouldnt "devils advocate" on you...!
(note: before commenting on all this spyware issues and viruses, please read the thread in its entirety, there might be something you missed, im sick of repeating i have all that anti spyware and virus junk)
gosh** sighh** "take a number" = lmao -
Windows and software doesn't just randomly do something wrong for no reason, people think this because they are to lazy to learn what really caused this problem.
it probably happened because windows shutdown strange for some reason, don't ask me why, i don' care.
remember that it is a computer and random things just don't happen. unless Microsoft programed it to just randomly do thinks differently, which they may have just to piss you off. -
no files were damaged, just my personal settings and my msn smilies
(i had 200) no OS is perfect, but microsoft is definantly the worst
check this out:
At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving twenty-five dollar cars that got 1000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:
1. For no reason whatsoever your car would crash twice a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.
4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn, would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to re-install the engine.
5. Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you bought "Car95" or "CarNT". But, then you would have to buy more seats.
6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but would only run on five percent of the roads.
7. The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single "general car default" warning light.
8. New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.
9. The airbag system would say "Are you sure?" before going off.
10. Occasionally for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
11. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Rand McNally road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they neither need them nor want them. Attempting to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50 percent or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Dept.
12. Every time GM introduced a new model car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
13. You'd press the "start" button to shut off the engine. -
I has worked more or less well in the last year or so -
-
im gonna call it a nght, see you all tommorow... YYAAAAWWWNNNN**** sigh
-
Okay, now that we've determined that it IS WinXP and you're covered as far as spyware, virus, firewall, registry cleaners are concerned, when was your system last defragmented? If you continue to have odd incidents of losing files, you might want to look at hardware issues - flaky memory or even a failing hard drive. Perhaps even reseating the memory should be done.
And as someone previously said a good backup strategy is also a MUST.
I routinely backup My Documents folder, Favorites, Desktop (I keep a lot of stuff on it) my email - I use Eudora, and my genealogy data in addition to making a whole disk image using True Image.
I don't do Automatic Windows Updates. I wait a few weeks to see if others are having problems with them .... Something to think about. -
Since the switch to 32-bit OS's (NT/W2k/XP), with dozens of PCs, I can honestly say I've never had any data corruption errors that I can attribute to the OS. Anytime I had a problem like that, it was always a HD failure.
-
I am never defragging my main drive ever again. When i did it recently, windows crashed itself. I managed to repair it enough to get my files off, but it was still buggy, so had to reformat to totally fix it. Since then it has been working fine. My hardware seems totally fine. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
There's definitely something wrong there - defragmenting doesn't screw up the drive like that. I've never even heard of that happening.
I'd download a few hard drive diagnostic programs and check your drive for bad sectors and other errors.
Chaz -
yeah, sounds like user or hardware error, not a windows issue.
-
defrag simply puts files that are scattered around your drive, together so it takes less time to find everything and access them...if it crashes your system, then it leads me to think that you are not properly maintaining your system, or the MBR is damaged, or the drives is faliing..again, it is not a windows issue..it is a hardware issue.

This is a wacky and most likely incorrect stab at things, but perchance do you have more than one user account on your computer? Maybe you somehow got switched to another one, that would explain why you couldn't find your personal settings, since they would be attached to the other account instead.
Yeah, yeah, I know. Silly idea. But it seems kinda weird that the only things you lost were the settings alone, and nothing else. -

If you were using the administrator account to begin with and then created another one, the admin account is hidden and the default one is the one you created. Is that what happened?
-
i distinctly remember running defrag like last week, there was only one error: a file that was like 400 megs couldnt be defragged even tho i have like 20 gigs of space left
i do have other accounts, 3 admins and i guest account, and those got wiped too. (3 admins cuz its the "family comp" but its still mine...dad wouldnt et me have myself as the only admin)
-
have you got Windows security updates on automatic? They could be useful.
-
This happened to a friend of mine- strangely enough, mostly to non Microsoft software. All her FF bookmarks and settings disappeared and Trillian vanished altogether! She's a phd student with reams of academic bookmarks, so wasn't exactly happy about it..
-
SEE??? im not CRAZZYY!!!!!! im not the ONLY one!!!! -
Defrag and AntiVirus scans should be done in Safe Mode. I think there was a virus that affected Favorites but that was quite some time ago. Can anyone confirm?
-
I can see how that's very frustrating for people out thereespecially non-techies.
As for me, I'm constantly reinstalling winxp every 2-3 weeks, because of all the **** piling up inthere.
Unfortunately "hail the penguin" is not really a solution all the times... just imagine using VS on day to day basis...
My solution: linux + windows either on dual boot or, if you don't do too strange things and have a powerful rig, vmware. -

Elderlycrawfish Notebook Consultant
Hrm, dunno why I didn't ask this sooner either, but do you have System Restore on? If so, you could try loading up a restore point from before your problem was noticed, and see if that will fix the user settings.
-
i still have all of my bookmarks in place, i use mozilla firefox BTW.
its interesting that i SHOULD run my diagnostics in safe mode,
quick question: how DO i get into safemode,
im a gamer not a techie -
once it gets past the POST test (ie, the annoying beep on startup) press and hold F8, this will take you to a boot-type select screen. choose safe mode.
-
and don't get me started on GM, they are the most bull**** company I can think of, American cars are so far behind everything else, mostly because of GM.
a better analogy for Microsoft would be, If GM had to make engines that would work in 95% of the worlds cars, they would be ****ed, to put it simply. but Microsoft somehow managed to accomplish this pretty **** well.
it is a hardware compatibility error most likely... -
You know that thing with GM and Microsoft is a joke right??
I am a FIRM believer that nothing "just happens" with computers. Whether people like to believe it or not, in one way or another, they are responsible for what happens to their computer. Sad but true. -
hear hear!
nothing just happens!
guns dont kill people. people kill people!
microsoft is the tool for a computer!
i agree with circa, thats why mac cars drive only 5% of the roads, hardware is only worth 5%, why most people are using windows? coz most of them find it more compatible with the stuff out there. im sorry about your situation but im guessing less than 5% have that problem.
il tell you if and when il join that 5 % lolz! -
-
LOL I feel you man, I'm sick of Windows just out of nowhere forgetting my personal settings, especially my icon placement on my desktop.
Probably just software conflicts that arise after use of your system, but still very annoying, I agree~!!!!!!
I Hate Windows!!!!
