What FPS do you get in what resolution and what settings?

I'm running it in XP as well, 1440x900, everything high, HDR, and anti-aliasing from nVidia Control Panel, and I get fps:

    LOW | AVG | HIGH
    23------37-----52

That's why I'm wondering if there's a significant difference in Vista, because you seem to have almost the hardware I have.

Wait till you all see Windows Vienna. Before XP, there was ME. I guess Vienna would be a great improvement over Vista.

I find something subtly perverse, or at the least inappropriate, about loving an operating system in general.

However, I received my Vista Home Premium notebook at the end of May and last used my previous XP notebook sometime in June.

I am relativly pleased with Vista. It has its quarks, as all OS do. But for its first year in use, I think its a good product.

If they are all the same, why can I run some APPs on one and not the other.

If they are all the same, why is one easier to use than another.

If they are all the same, why do some use different file systems.

If they are all the same, why can I burn DVDs natively on one and not another?

You know what I'm getting at. Your comment was kind of dumb.

Not really. You switch to a minimalistic setting, then you lose functionality.

Several times I have installed a game, and there is no start menu item. It just disappears altogether. So have to create the start menu shortcuts myself. The Windows "Game" folder won't let you organize the way you want either.

Audio driver issues and graphics driver issues. Crackling audio that goes away when using XP on the same machine.

The way Vista sets up its start menu and windows explorer is completely backwards, with no way to revert back to "XP style".

Completely memory hogging for no apparent reason. Games do not run any faster, if anything slower, and do not look better even with DirectX 10 options activated.

I'll give it another go in another year or if I'm forced to use it because of a "must-have" game. But I don't see that happening any time soon.

That's what I'm waiting for really, is Vienna. That is what Vista should have been. I will stick with dual-boot for now... and hopefully won't have to dabble with Vista too much.

I use vista but after reading this thread I wanna switch back to XP. Lets compare:

    1. Boot up time - XP
    2. Looks pretty - Vista
    3. Stability/driver compatibility - XP
    4. The right now useless Directx10 - Vista
    5. Gaming - XP
    6. Requires more resources for no apparent reason - Vista

Hmmm its a toss up :D

Um... No? I use Vista Ultimate x64 in classic Windows mode (ex. No Aero) and its actually just like XP, which I also ran in classic Windows mode. I have had NO problems accessing games or programs through the start menu. In fact, I haven't set foot in this "Games Explorer" thing. Honestly, at the moment I don't even know how to access it.

So I can say without a doubt that programs and games do still make shortcuts in the start menu programs list. And generally, they work quite well. The only "problem" I've encountered is that sometimes I need to run a program as administrator, but thats pretty easy and not a real problem.

You know. Honestly, this has been explained on these very forums countless times so you really should understand this by now. But anyway, the reason Vista appears to use so much RAM is because it caches programs it thinks you might run into RAM so that if you DO try to run them they start nearly instantly. However, if a program needs that RAM Vista will instantly make it free for the program that needs it. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Remember that. Or..., just forget it again and go back to hating a feature that actually makes your computer faster.

Edit - Right now, my computer has 2 gigabytes of RAM, and at this moment about 20 megabytes are actually free. But I'm happy about that, because I know that the RAM is being used to increase performance, rather than just sitting there being wasted.

Yes, yes you do Eclipse. For me i barely use 1GB most of the time but since i have 2 i barely keep track. It all depends on what your using it for though. For general use 1GB is fine, but for advanced use, or use of Firefox with vista then 2GB is recommended.

Here we go again. The people that don't even use Vista saying it's another ME. I have a news flash for you, it's not even close to ME. If this is not what you meant to imply, sorry I took it the wrong way. This OS works and works well. Try it you might like it. I do...

P.S. Do you think the system requirements are going to be lower for Vienna?

Funny - I was thinking about posting a thread with this very title.

I've been using Vista for a couple months now on my new Toshiba x205 and it runs perfectly. The only problems I've really had are old applications that are not using vista's new file locations. I really wish games would use the new "Saved Games" folder.

I think a lot of problems with Vista are 1.) Microsoft's marketing and hype 2.) people running it on older hardware and 3.) people using older software.

With such a huge jump in functionality and performance I think this OS requires new hardware and anyone trying to run it on XP generation software will be dissapointed. I know it requires and investment of money and time to upgrade everything - But I think that mixing technology like that is just asking for problems.

I agree Vista is great...that is with good hardware. It's like when people used to use Windows 98 and people talked trashed on Windows XP (release) about how slow and uncompatible it is.

But A lot of people will switch to Vista when SP1 is released, just my guess.

Its interesting that you find the boot time so important. Mind if I ask why? With Vista I believe you're not really supposed to shut it down very often, but instead use the sleep feature which brings the computer back online winthin a couple of seconds (literally). Plus, it seems like Vista's sleep feature is much better than XP's in its stability and reliability.

You have the same notebook as me E1705, but I am replacing it with the one from my Sig, just waiting on NewEgg to deliver it to me. I am in a safe mode right now as I type. My screen is messed up, hundreds of dead pixels just come and go, and now my 2 fans at the bottom stopped working, so I can't even go to Normal Mode, BSOD pops up and comp freezes. I don't even feel like fixing it anymore, it served me good 1.5 years, time for something new. I am so desperate to play Flight Simulator X on my new laptop, because this one barely runs it on Medium.

Check out that sticky in Windows OS and Software. But if you've done that already, all I can tell you is to re-install your Vista (Clean Install and QuickFormat your HDD), that's what I do when my Windows runs slow. But then again everything I have is on my external Hard Drive: my Game images, software, my documents, videos, music...etc.

I did quite a bit of research on Vista before buying my laptop. I had actually thought about doing some sort of clean install with Windows XP Pro SP2 or actually dual booting between Vista and Ubuntu Linux but from the first boot, right out of the box, Vista is impressive. It was pretty responsive even with all the bloatware and uncustomized settings.

My desktop runs Windows XP Pro SP2 with identical 2GB RAM, faster HDD speed, and other similar specifications. The difference maker to me is the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and the OS, Windows Vista. I made some of my own tweaks as well as learning about some new tweaks from this forum and Vista is very responsive. I can run multiple computing applications along with internet, music, and other miscellaneous applications and the speed is not compromised. Vista manages memory differently than Windows XP and previous operating systems. I'm not at all taken by surprise when I see the amount of RAM Vista is occupying. What were you going to do with all that RAM anyway, save it for later? ;) Basically Vista performs, and on top of all that, it looks good.

I really dont understand what so many people and even businesses are complaining about. Sure, Vista probably wont run well at all with 512MB RAM, but who these days goes for 512MB RAM? Everyone goes for mid-level specifications, even with Windows XP. This is a new era, a new time, a new generation. I can understand businesses holding off on Vista until SP1, because this is what all corporations do with new operating systems. Sometimes I think people just magically forget how to use a computer when they switched to Vista. Vista has much improved security, totally different UI, but the Windows environment is still there.

I like Windows Vista and I'm happy with the time and effort I put into background study before finally spending my money.

I beg to differ. Tomb Raider Anniversary, STALKER, ArmA, and C&C 3 just didn't even register anywhere. No sign of shortcuts or anything. Just "POOF" gone.

Games Explorer sounds great, but it's too rudimentary to be of any usefuleness.

Not to mention the start menu and windows explorer putting programs at top and directories at bottom. No way to change that either, which is just completely dumb. If you organize your files, you embed them a few folders deep, and for efficiencies sake, just want to click/click/click to get there. Not click/scroll/click/scroll/scroll/click

if you're talking about efficiency, then just start typing in the name of the file/folder you want as soon as you open the start/windows menu. it'll filter out immediately so you can hit enter and launch the file.

    1. Boot up time - Vista
    2. Looks Pretty - Vista
    3. Stability - Vista
    4 - Driver compatibility - XP
    5 - Directx10(will not be useless forever) - Vista
6 - Gaming - I can't call it ...being I only Played SWAT 4, FEAR, HALO and San Andreas on Vista. And it's works as good as if I were playing on XP.
    7. Resources - Actually if you custom XP to do what Vista does... like Sidebar, index searching etc: It about the same.

no problems with Vista as long you tweak it :) So far gaming on Vista isn't that bad as people has said....you just have to get the right drivers :) So far it's been good for me....and the XP GUI is outdated so the Aero brings the wow factor.....one thing I love about Vista is Dreamscene....playing HD videos in the background is sweet :)

yeah... with recent hardware and some tweaks vista is awesome. As long as you have 2GB of RAM and 2Ghz CPU handling vista is a breeze.

I don't have any problem with games either. :p

So far, every XP-ers was terribly envious after using my 5920G. But of course, they didn't have to spend hours and hours setting up Vista and tweaking it to be just right.

Fittersman, that is the best and most creative sig I have seen in the last 10 years.

Oh and now onto Vista. I went back to XP because the UI as it stands right now annoys the living hell out of me. I absolutely hate the file cabinet, file drawer approach it really is irritating. With XP you click on Start and you see all your Programs and all you have to do is move your cursor over the program and a submenu appears. I also get better performance with certain games and some of my racing games don't even work in Vista.

I really like Vista, not just on my computers, but by the end of the week all of my parent and parents in-law will be running Vista, making my "Phone support" much easier.

Only problem I have had is Tiger Woods 07 won't run argh.

I do a clean install, shift to Vista Basic (On laptops) and then let it run. Crapware (at least from HP) really gives Vista a bad name.

I have not looked for a shortcut or file for months. I simply hit windows key and the first few letters of the file, application, web/network location etc and I am on my way.

    I am a fan

Vista is great. Zero problems on this end as well.

Age of Empires 3 runs flawlessly.

And after the hotfixes from Microsoft are installed, Vista improves greatly. (Not to mention the tweak guide by flamenko)
