Can someone out there PLEASE help me? I am not a computer person by far! I know point and click (although I am able to understand more with guidance).
My hard drive crashed on my computer so I went and got another one today. I plugged it in and inserted my XP disk (since there was no operating system on the new one).
After a couple of minutes of it reading the XP disk I end up with this message on a blue screen.
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time youve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor or visit http://www.hardware-update.com for an updated BIOS. If you are unable to obtain an updated BIOS or the latest BIOS supplied by your vendor is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode during text mode setup. To do this, simply press the F7 key when you are prompted to install storage drivers. The system will not notify you that the F7 key was pressed - it will silently disable the ACPI and allow you to continue your installation.
Technical information:

I hit F7 and have gotten nothing. I can't go to the website suggested because there is obviously no operating system on it yet so HTF am I supposed to get online to the website they suggest to fix it???
I can follow instructions very well, so if anyone can guide me as to what is needed to be done with this darn thing I wouold GR8ly appreciate it!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure how this works? Am I supposed to constantly check my email for reply's?

You need to relax. Give us more information. What kind of computer is it.. Make, model, etc.. What happened when your "hard drive crashed." What does that mean?
What do you mean you went out and "got another one" and plugged it in. -
It's an HP Pavillion. My friend came over to look at it and said my hard drive crashed and I needed a new one. It wouldn't read anything and just kept making a clicking sound. I am on my old computer right now. The HP was working fine before I moved into this place in august. I hooked it up so my GF would have her own computer and after installing the CD for the Belkin wireless remote on the HP, that is when it went berzerk.
I went to a local computer store that sells computers and parts and got a hard drive there this morning. I plugged it in exactly the same as the old one was. -
What model pavillion? What type of hard drive was the old one, and what type is the new one. It should be on the hard drive or the packaging. Did you yourself open it up and replace it? Are you sure it was replaced correctly?
-
How do you know it was the hard drive that "crashed" before? Did anyone ever professionally diagnose that issue? If not, you may have replaced a perfectly healthy drive because you had some other hardware problem. (EDIT: Yes, a clicking drive is certainly failed. Disregard this.)
There are a few important things to try.
Testing the memory is a big one.
Making sure you have an updated Windows XP disc is another.
Here is a possible work around for you, but I would consider it temporary at best since it does not address the underlying problem, only sidesteps it.

I'm no expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
I found some info on this at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314830
http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=141055
So I suggest you try removing the belkin card and then reinstalling windows xp. -
I'm not sure if it's really a hard drive problem or other hardware problems (motherboard, BIOS, etc.). So I suggest you to make sure if the new hard drive (perhaps your old HDD too) works by connecting it to a working computer (how about your good friend's PC!).
-
It sounds like the Harddrive works, if it is new. But check to make sure.
Sounds like it is something else though.
If Setup isn't loading up, it could be something small as a bad XP disc or something big like the motherboard acting up.
I'd try another XP disc first. -
Well I was about to post in the other thread but it got closed. Wasn't aware this was the same thread. Anyway...this is what I was gonna post.
Ok...it appears that your new HDD supports a feature called ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) but your computer doesn't support it as it is. You have two options...either 1) Try updating your BIOS to the latest version, in hope that the latest update supports ACPI by going to HPs' website, choose the correct computer series and search for a BIOS update under the Drivers section; or 2) Just disable the ACPI feature in the computer's BIOS.
I personally would just disable ACPI. The easiest way might be to go into the computer's BIOS by pressing the F10 Key (continually press it as the computer appears to boot) on the keyboard soon after you press the power button to turn on the computer. If it's not the F10 Key, most likely at the bottom of the screen as you power on the computer it will tell you what Key to press to get into the BIOS/Setup. Once in the BIOS browse through the various Tabs and search for the ACPI feature and disable it using the correct selection Key inputs etc. and then Save that configuration and exit the BIOS and try running the XP installation again.
The other way to disable ACPI is to follow the method in your post where they say to press the F7 Key. As the XP installation disc extracts the files needed to start the installation you should see the option to press the F7 Key at the bottom of the screen as it loads. This is of course once the Blue Screen error you posted above doesn't come before that.
PS: BTW, you can use another computer connected to the Internet to download the BIOS update if you choose to go that route, and save it on a jump drive or ext. HDD. -
