I bought a second hand STOLEN laptop , VISA chargeback ...

I bought this laptop in a spanish shop, it was the laptop used in the shop by the owner , an acer travelmate .

When my friend was going to put windows XP on it instead of the Vista, he found out it was stolen.


What I need to show as proof to VISA to get a chargeback ?

 

How did your friend determine that it was stolen?

 

This I'd like to know as well. I thought you could only determine that a laptop is stolen by matching the laptop's serial key or similar (hardware only).

 

Sounds interesting. Could it be that the Windows license is actually the illegal part? I do not believe there is any service offered by MS to notify users of stolen hardware, only illegal MS software. If it is in fact a software issue, it is a simple problem to correct.

when you buy a second hand laptop, do you buy the hardware only with the licence being transferred with it or the hardware and the license are part of the price. Because in the case that you bought the hardware then I would think the fact that the license of XP is invalid would become irrelevant... But I'm not a legal expert so take it for what it's worth.

 

Well, since the Vista on it didn't had any service packs updates , he tried to do that and that's how he found out.

He said he installed some piece of software that looks automatically for a serial number that isn't compromised and did the updates.

Can you really find out by the serial number of an Acer laptop, if the laptop is stolen ?

 

Should be on the underside of the laptop on a panel, as are most. My old acer has an Acer program that would also view system information (w/ the serial number). I have not heard of Acer implementing a serial number update utility, but it may be a 3rd party piece of security software. There are a couple different one's out there that may require it to authenticate before connecting to the internet/logging in/etc.

keygen generates a serial, doesn't look for it.

lOl .. i think the OS is illegal n doing updates must have said - u thieve kidding..but i think it must be illegal/pirated software..

 

Illegal OS doesn't equate to a stolen computer. If it had LoJack then it would've called home reporting where it is. All he has to do is delete everything and install a legit OS but LoJack is difficult to delete since it will reside higher up in memory.

 

Yeah like everyone said - the OS may be pirated but the laptop itself may very well be legit.

 

So did you buy a laptop that was stolen, or a laptop with pirated Vista on it?

. VISA probably will ask you to communicate with the seller first before jumping in.

maybe it isn't even an iligal OS. I heard that microsoft had some cases of false negatives. Anyway it has NOTHING to do with a stolen latop...
