I can get a free copy of the business version of vista. Is it worth installing?

Basically, i'm looking for some advice on the advantages of vista over XP

I do only have 1GB RAM, is it likely to be slower with vista than XP?

The advisor thing i ran said i would be able to run any version of vista and use the aero glass interface, but didnt appear to like the idea of using my printer!

    Thats all for now

and no, its nothing illegal... i get access to free windows software (generally all the business type stuff) from my university since i study in the computer science department. I would have to download it over the internet though, which is likely to take over 24 hours, a little annoying i guess

Vista... sometimes very reluctant to cooperate with ur hardware... Try it, if it doesnt work out, u can always switch back to XP.
    What other spec u have?

80GB hard drive (though ive only got 12GB free so will need to delete some stuff to make the 15 vista wants) The main partition amounts to about 65GB
    1.8Ghz centrino duo
i cant find what graphics card it is but its fairly decent

would personally not recommend anything under 20gb for vista

if u have a HP printer, then it would be tough, i learned a very hard way

    cheers ...

ah... yes, it is a HP printer, a deskjet 3420, which i do use a fair bit for printing lecture notes & the like so it'd be a big problem if it didn't work :(

I've also just installed a free business version of Vista (courtesy of my university and a 10 mb/s download :D ) and so far so good. I'm very impressed; I'm not sure if Vista is just tricking me or not but I see a definite performance increase.. I think it's actually using my two cores!

But anyways, yeah with your specs I would hold off for a while or go for an upgrade first (your RAM most likely). You should be able to run it fine if you disable some of the features though.

Although this topic's already been covered numerous times in these forums with links to various "professional" reviews and impressions, my opinion is that it is worth it to switch to Vista---especially if you get it for free legitimately from your university. There are numerous reasons why, feel free to do a search in this forum, but I think you will find some of the new features very helpful for productivity and performance. I would clear out some room and set aside a 25GB partition for Vista and Vista specific applications for a dual boot setup.

Vista will run fine with 1GB ram. That's what I have on my 6400 and it runs perfectly. Of course, if you are a huge multi-tasker etc, 2gb would be great. However, even if that were the case, 1gb is still very useable for the average user, in my opinion.

More RAM in never a bad thing...so, upgrade when you can, but it shouldn't stop you from giving Vista a shot.
