Today i went to start Windows Media Centre which launched as normal but i was then greeted by the follwing error message Unable to launch "SymAddin".

I use vista ultimate 32 bit, i always do some google research before i post a question here and its possible that this problem maybe down to a registry entry left behind after i removed Norton 360. I have run the Norton removal tool twice in total, once when i un-installed Norton and again just now to see if it would remove this problem of which it didn`t.

Has anyone encountered the same problem because i want to know how you stop the error message coming up ?

How do you remove this problem for good ?

Ive run the Norton removal tool which is supposed to clear all that type of thing, ive manually checked in programmes and their is nothing there to do with Norton or Symantec.

I have also ran a search on my laptop for Norton and Symantec and that brought up nothing, i did find the following instructions via google but i am a bit wary of deleting a reg entry considering i have not seen any replies from people that have said it worked apart from this person who posted the instructions and said it worked.

    Instructions i found via google:

Open up the Registry Editor, use "find" and deleted all entries that
contained symaddin (there were 4, 2 of which were in the Media Centre). I no
longer get the message when opening Media Centre.

I opened Regedit and ran a search via "find" and found this entry for SymAddin, according to the instructions above i should delete it, what would you do if the method hasn`t been acknowldged yet by anyone other than the person that posted it who said it worked ?

First, I would back up the registry. Second, I would only delete the keys in the Media Center section.

I have managed to get rid of that message that was popping up to do with SymAddin and touch wood everything seems to be working just fine, if anyone else gets the problem then this is what i did.

Make sure you have back up discs or a registry back up before making any changes or deleting things from the registry

I opened the registry by typing "regedit" into search on vista, in the registry this is the way i did it. On the edit tab click find and type in SymAddin and click the find next tab. Now this is what i did, when it found an entry for SymAddin i would delete it and re-boot my laptop. I would then open up Media Center to see if the SymAddin error message would appear, it did after the first delete.

So you repeat the above again, open up regedit and click find and then type in SymAddin again and click find next. Again it brought up another SymAddin entry, i deleted it and re booted my laptop and opened up Media Center again. This time the SymAddin error message had gone, basically it was a case of deleting an entry one by one and re booting after each time you deleted entry rather than doing repeat searches and deletes one after another.

Its similar to the above method that someone posed on google but the way i did it was to re boot after each deleted reg entry and try media center each time after the re boot to see if the error message had gone.
