I bought windows vista home premium with sp1 today. I want to know if i will be entitled for a free upgrade to windows 7 when it gets released? Is there a specific date to register my vista so that i'm entitled for a free upgrade when windows 7 gets released?

I don't know but I hope so. I think there's no official info at the moment, just rumors and wishes.

According to an article on Tom's Hardware (and many other sites), only folks who buy Vista after July 1, are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade.

I don't think so but I'm really not sure about it.
You could go down the Windows Refund route as a last resort.
Don't expect to get the full retail price amount but it could help getting part of the money needed to buy Windows7.
    Cheers.
