" The BCM42RLY service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified"

This error keeps popping up in Event Viewer multiple times. Has anyone found a solution to this? It's on a Dell Vostro 1500 with Vista SP1.

Thanks guys. I reinstalled the driver and i'm still getting the same error message, weird. And in response to Wirelessman, i've had zero issues getting on the internet, wired or wireless (no pun intended). ;)

It's just this error keeps pooping up in the event viewer.

edit: The link Wirelessman gave it appears i'm missing the bcm42rly.sys file. Instead I have bcm4sb xp.sys

This gets even stranger. I installed the driver twice and the file is nowhere to be found on my system.

Nope it's still there. Oh well i've lived with long enough. I think part of the problem is Vista on it's initial installation installs it's generic Broadcom drivers. That might be contributing to the problem, who knows for sure.

Oh well thanks guys ! :)

OK I found the answer. These are NOT TRUE Vista drivers.

I checked the install driver directory. It shows as DOS, WIN2K, and WINXP. Hence it's why i'm seeing a different driver installed and why the Broadcom applcation reports it as missing.

The application is looking for bcm42rly.sys and instead it finds bcm4sb xp.sys

So basically it installed an XP driver. Windows Vista doesn't install the correct driver either so the app flags it as missing. I tried Dell's driver but it's the same as the one on the disk.

I'll need to check Broadcom's website and see if I can get that file from there.

I did read the link. What did I miss?

edit: yup I ran Avira, Defender, SuperAntiSpyware and CCleaner.

OK but that doesn't help those who want to get rid of these entries since Dell and Broadcom don't have real Vista drivers.

I found a permanent solution to the annoyance. I disabled the event logger service. :D

Lol, good but run ccleaner or antivirus in case your computer is infected. To disable the event logger doesn't remove the source of the problem ;)

I wouldn't recommend disabling the event logger service.

How about make a copy of bcm4sbxp.sys, then rename it to bcm42rly.sys and place it in the same folder. Then the service will find bcm42rly.sys without any problem.

Listen, to rename it, ignore it, hide it, are all ways to avoid the issue, he has to solve it.

Not in this case. How can he "solve" it when the real Vista driver doesn't exist according to him?

Since the driver is working in a way, my suggestion is just to fool the system so that it thinks that it's a Vista driver. I know it's not the best way, but it's not the same as ignore it or hide it.

I did run CCleaner and Avira several times upon a clean install and the message is still there. I'm confident there are no viruses or spyware etc on the system especially when all I did was a clean install and installed SP1. ;)

I do like The Doctor's approach. When I get home i'll try renaming the file.

Don't just rename though, make a copy and rename that one, so both will be there.

Have you tried to clean the registers?

This is my concern, thing don't just show in a warning window for nothing, I'm not saying that is affecting your machine, at least for now, but it could in the long term.

Ok, I just did another search about missing bcm42rly.sys, renaming it might give you another problem, I'm not sure though, this user didn't rename, instead he found a copy of bcm42rly.sys and used it:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3392877

I think your problem is related to Vista SP1, I read a few Dell users having the same problem with missing bcm42rly.sys, although this file does exist before, not sure how it got to be missing.

Been getting the same error after installing Vista SP1. After doing some digging, I found that in the registry there are two entries to startup services for the wireless card:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\BCM42RLY
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\BCM43XX

The second seems to be correct, pointing to a valid driver file. The first is the key causing the issue. If, in the first key, you change the value for the 'Start' key to 4 (disable) rather than its default 3 (start), the error goes away but the wireless card still functions.

This solution is along the lines of one I was also struggling with - a parallel port error on a machine with no parallel port:
