I got a new Inspiron 1520 not too long ago. It's great, the screen is gorgeous (1680x1050) but I was reformatting the HDD (vista premium) and reinstalling drivers and I think I installed an audio driver for a device my laptop doesn't have...now I can't get any sound to come out, is there an easy way to fix this?

Is it conflicting and can't you uninstall it? Are you downloading drivers through the Dell resource CD?

Check the selected audio output device under audio settings of control panel. Maybe your default audio out is set to something else (like Bluetooth audio etc.)

From this and at least one other thread, I'd say we could also blame AIM for global warming!

this is severely and unnecessarily drastic for a simple driver problem. please do not do a system restore for a problem like this.

What's drastic about doing a system restore? I do them all the time. Only takes about 5 minutes. Unless you mean a reinstall, but that is not what he said.

Why not? That is PRECISELY what the system restore is for. I believe you are thinking the OP said REINSTALL not RESTORE.

Just go under Device Manager. Locate the Audio devices, right-click the specific device you want to uninstall, then click Uninstall. In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, select the Delete the driver software for this device option and then click OK. Restart the computer.

    Hope this helps.

The other reply about the new version of AIM is true! If you have Vista and AIM, watch out! I had sound problems as well…. each and every time I installed AIM, which was three different times. Each time I got the same problems. I simply uninstalled AIM completely, and did a system restore to a point where AIM was not installed. Problem solved, each and every time. The bottom line is….AIM is DEFINITELY the culprit here! My advice is to NOT install it on Vista until they get the issue fixed. I have NEVER, EVER had these sound and network issues until I installed AIM. When you get rid of it, you MUST do a system restore to get the system back to normal. Make sure you restore to a restore point when AIM was NOT installed, otherwise you’ll still have the audio/network issues when you reboot. So AIM needs to get their act together, or Microsoft needs to come out with a compatibility patch to make Vista and AIM work together in harmony. If you have Vista and you have AIM 6.5, get rid of one or the other!
