I made a Windows 10 "decrapifier", thought I might share it here

    Hey everyone

When I first got WIndows 10 I was not pumped on all the extras it came with.. I didn't use the metro apps, Cortana, OneDrive... I also didn't like some of the tracking stuff I found going on. So, I wrote a Powershell script.

It does the following and more:
    - removes all "metro apps" including the store if you wish. Or, you can keep the store and the calculator!
    - disables Cortana, OneDrive
    - turns off a bunch of tracking "features"
    - turns of Windows update delivery "optimization"
    - turns off WiFi sense (already disabled on Anniversary edition)

Been using this pretty much since Windows 10 was released, no problems! Personally, I use i on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. Also works great on Anniversary edition. I'll be updating it soon to include a few extra tweaks for the Anniversary Edition.

    So, here it is!

    https://community.spiceworks.com/scripts/show/3298-windows-10-decrapifier

There are directions in there, follow them closely for best results :)

Hopefully some of you find it useful!

Disables OneDrive? Can I switch that to not disable that? I use OneDrive for business off site backups.

Just comment out the relevant piece of code:

    Code:
    write-Host "***Disabling OneDrive...***"

    reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive" /t REG_DWORD /v DisableFileSyncNGSC /d 1 /f
    reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive" /t REG_DWORD /v DisableFileSync /d 1 /f
    reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartupApproved\Run" /t REG_BINARY /v OneDrive /d 0300000021B9DEB396D7D001 /f

How does this compare to O&O shutup? Those using O&O shutup can those reply to this? Just my short review of this custom version the O&O has those options on there already and it is free.

OneDrive, meh. Even if you select "do not load at startup"... it still loads at startup. Troll software. I may try these reg edits. Thanks!

    @csand

Because doing it yourself, you know it's done right, and works every time - you don't need to worry about someone elses "update" that breaks it quietly.

"If you need something done right every time, do it yourself" :)

    Isn't Windows 10 "decrapifier" an oxymoron? o_O

    It's a Zero-Sum solution.

Decrapifying Windows 10 results in no Windows ;)

Installing Windows 8.1/7 over Windows 10 would also decrapify Windows 10 :)

Haha, honestly I'd never even heard of O&O Shutup so I can't really comment on how it compares.. but I do know, like you said.. writing my own let me do it my way - when I first started writing this (right when W10 was released), a lot of the available/similar utilities were... questionable in what they did, lol.

For Onedrive, I actually comment that part out myself since I've started using it sometimes.

Thanks for the reps and sorry for the lack of replies.. been busy :D

And, well, I prefer Windows 10 to 7 or 8.1... can't hang on to those relics forever boys :D

Actually you can...until there is no support or Windows Update for 7 or 8.1 it's not a relic yet so those wishing will have to wait a long long time. Relic is MS-DOS that is relic.....

And DX12 isn't what the Redmond Morons said it was. You gain nothing, only lower fps than previous DX version. But you get nice ****y pastel colored tiles. What have this with performance gains to do?

Still running 8.1 with updates completely disabled on my AW18. Works perfectly and I'm sticking with it for as long as I have my AW. Running Win 7 on my old laptop with updates completely disabled and it works fine for what I use it for. Sticking with that until the laptop dies. Run Win 10 on my Surface and new laptop. I have disabled alot of "features" and don't do much beyond very basic things on them. Also have 10 on my Kangaroo Mini PC but I simply use that hooked up to a TV so I can hook my external HD with my movies on it up to it. The Kangaroo is so freakin cool tho. Little mini PC the size of a portable HD that has a battery so you can take it places without turning it off and losing anything. So cool.

But yeah, Win 10 offers no benefits performance wise and destroys what little privacy we used to have in addition to dictating what we do with our systems as opposed to responding to what we want to do with our systems like a good OS should.

Guys, listen: this thread is supposed to be used for people if they have questions or comments for my script I am offering - not to whine and moan about Windows 10. Seriously, if you want to soapbox about 10, take it elsewhere.

    Begin rant:

Of course there are privacy concerns. That is price we as consumers are paying for willingly using, and in fact demanding more, integrated services. Siri or Cortana simply can't work without "getting to know you". It's kinda the basis of the whole thing. CEIP has been around since Vista. Same deal. Facebook would not exist if consumer metrics were worthless. Honestly, the info Windows collects isn't much compared to say Facebook, or your Google account, or even your phone.

FYI, Windows 7 only sends marginally less info to Microsoft about you. 8.1 in that respect is similar to 10. And I'm supposing while pointing the finger at MS, many people may own an iPhone or Samsung, or what have you.... and "what is going on behind the scenes there?", you may now be wondering.

So yea. Sorry for the rant, not trying to be a dick, but if you're just here to voice your "facts" about Windows 10... kindly see yourself to the door.

    End rant :)

10 ain't perfect, far from it, but I saw what I liked, I saw what I didn't like, and rather than complain, I changed it. It is literally that simple.

Enjoy the fruits of my labour!

I agree with the OP, in that this is a process (relevant to most if not all Windows 10 users) that should be automated, with a single point to determine that your system *is in* and *stays in* your desired consistent state (anti-telemetry or whatever).

Bravo and thanks to the OP for publishing the fruits of his or her labor!

In addition to O&O Shutup10, there also exists Spybot Anti-beacon. The goals are similar to the OP's. Use whatever you wish and whomever you trust, to keep your system in your desired state of preferred compliance. A tool built by the OP can be just as trusting and effective as a commercial solution, especially if one can audit the code, as one can do here.
