Hey all,
I'm looking for a screensaver that either
a) does something useful while not being too flashy and distracting
b) displays cool but low-key abstract pattern that doesn't require a ton of system resources to generate
Poking around the web for good screensavers tends to produce a lot of junk. So I thought I'd post here and see what all of you are using. (Recommendations that don't fit my categories but are otherwise noteworthy are also welcome.)

Don't use screensavers, use Dreamscene. If you've got a good enough system (with a satisfactory GPU...no Intel iGPU) then you can run dreamscene with only a 4% or 5% CPU drain. That's always been negligible if you ask me.

Cool, thanks guys.
Any other suggestions? Anything in the way of application screensavers? -
When I used one I liked AMD screenSpace AMD Developer Central - Legacy Screensavers
BTW be careful there a lot of shady sites. -
Another recommendation for Dreamscene. dreamscene.org - Home - free dreamscenes, windows 7 themes and desktop tools
The only screensavers i remember using and having fun with were from After Dark. I think they may have even had some screensavers that worked as games. This is circa the beginning of the millenium. Not sure what it's like now but I found a link

Does Dreamscene work with Windows 8, 8.1?
-
I don't think it does. Dreamscene was a Windows Vista thing. The framework is present in Windows 7, but you would need to activate it. But with all the shortcomings in Windows 8, it may have been gutted from the system finally.

And heed JOSEA's warning. Downloaded screensavers are a known avenue for virus's, trojan's and other bad stuff.

I just poweroff my notebook when i'm away, dat 8 second startup
-
My Windows 7 UltraBook starts up in 7 seconds, cold boot, so there.
Of course, there's really no reason to ever shut it down. Wake-up from sleep is instantaneous; well, by the time the lid is fully open, the system's back, anyway.radji likes this. -
