I have an Asus A52JC, almost two years old. So far so good.

A few days ago something went wrong during windows updates. I thought the laptop was starting to have problems but after lots of research I think this is what happened:

The problems are caused by a Silverlight update. The files have probably been corrupted or something.
I've been trying to update the following many times and it keeps failing
Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB2690729) 6MB

    I found a solution.

Here, they say that you can delete Silverlight and there's the option to do it automatically by using Fix it for me

How to clean a corrupted Silverlight installation and then reinstall Silverlight

Then, you can reinstall from here
    Get Silverlight | Microsoft Silverlight

Sounds pretty simple but then it says there
" Note that you must have sufficient administrative privileges to install Silverlight."

    1) So, my question is, how do I know that I have "sufficient administrative privileges"?

    2) What if it asks for a pw? What pw am I supposed to put in?

    3) If I manage to uninstall but then have a problem reinstalling, what happens? How important is this Silverlight thing?

I'll appreciate any help and in simple terms please (I'm no computer wiz)

    Thanks :)

Back up your important files and just try it.

Personally from what I recall Silverlight is not an essential component of Windows. I have would recommend removing it entirely and only install/update it if you need it.

easiest way to think of it can be found in the first sentence of wikipedia's silverlight article. that said, you don't necessarily need silverlight unless you're attempting to view objects/multimedia scripted for it on a webpage or elsewhere. there's really not much silverlight content that you probably frequent (if any at all) so it's sort of optional for now. if you attempt to view content that requires it and don't have it, you'd be prompted to download and install it the same way you would for flash or java if you didn't have those installed.

you have sufficient administrative privileges by default if you're the only windows user account (i.e. the account you logon to windows with). if you so choose to reinstall silverlight, you'll get the windows popup asking if you'd like to allow the program to make changes to windows. you know, the annoying popup things that gray out the rest of the screen? they're called user account control (UAC) notifications. 99.9% sure you won't have to enter a password, but if you were prompted for one it'd be your windows password.

Netflix uses Microsoft Silverlight to deliver on-demand movies

So if you don't use Netflix then don't install it and do what the above posters suggest.

Several other streaming services use it too. I know ShowTime on Xfinity does. If you go ahead and uninstall it when you do need it they'll let you put it back. Being a Micro$oft product, you'll probably have to install it using I.E. I had to do it that way as Xfinity doesn't get along with Chrome.

I had worked on a laptop once that had the same issue. The owner tried to uninstall Silverlight and it reported as being uninstalled and when he went to re-install Silverlight it reported as being "already installed" He used the laptop for playing his Netflix so he needed the Silverlight installed in it. I do not know if he tried the "Fix it Now" from Microsoft but he brought it to me and I manually went through the registry and deleted every Silverlight entry. (What a PITA!) Took about 30 min or so but it was finally gone and I was able to install Silverlight and it worked fine. CAUTION: DO NOT PLAY WITH THE REGISTRY IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. You could damage it and make you system unbootable and it could require an OS reload.

I find nothing wrong with silverlight. I have both silver light and Adobe flash player and shockwave and have yet to get any problems far from the sites visiting not being able to handle the lastest plugins or they are using out dated or poorly installed drivers that can't load or run correctly for my plugins. And to the OP not knowing what O/S they are using would help to know what is going on as well. With little specs to go on besides the Asus Model they mentioned and what other software they have installed it's all guesses as to what is happening.

I am registered as the owner and don't really need Admin privileges to install most programs only a rare few with exception are needed. So as why Silverlight in your case needs it as my Silverlight install never needed it in the first place?

If your the owner and installed the O/S to begin with you have sufficient privileges to install most programs to begin with. I think there is more problems with your system and O/S then your leading us to believe???

There is no password to install most apps if your the owner. Admin is a last resort and in Windows 7 is hidden til you so some funky commands to get it to show and only then should be used sparingly and not as a first resort. As I mentioned in my reply there is more problem then your telling us here that isn't being mentioned.

There are some sites that uses M$ Silverlight whether you know it or not and IE use Silverlight to run as well for certain sites even if you have Adobe Flashplayer or Shockwave installed having the plugins only can help as there will be times when some sites will say you don't have the plugin to view the video or stream and will ask you to install and most likely if you do that then would be asking for more problem then installing and running it ahead of time to prevent such problems from happening in the first place.

As I read and reply to this thread one questions begs to be asked are you the owner of the laptop or no? What your asking and what seems to be happening would mean your not the registered owner of the laptop?? Why else would just install Silverlight be asking for a password on a simple install?? Or is there more problem that isn't be told to us??? I never had to use password to install programs far from the login and registration keys for my apps. Admin accounts should be taken lightly as that can cause more problems if you can't fix just the simple install problems. Sounds more like a total reboot and cd/dvd recovery is needed to fix the problem???
