    Hi,,

Is anyone running win8.1 on Dell XPS (L502x)?
I have installed two months ago, but it was overheating too much and the fan always running on maximum speed, did MS solved the problem or still??

That is not Microsoft's problem to solve. If it only happens on that model, it's Dell's problem. If it only happens on *yours* then it's your problem.

There are many reasons for a laptop running hot under certain conditions. You need to determine what process is running in the background causing the CPU to run more than it should. If the CPU is required to run and being taxed more then the fans are going to kick in to cool things down.

Windows 8 in general runs more processes in the background. With Windows 8.1 OneDrive is used to sync your MS account. There are other factors which can cause the machine to run hotter such as performing a disk clean after installing patches.

If none of the above provides any solutions you may want to look into SpeedFan and tweak it so it's constantly running at low RPM's. That should help with CPU Fan speed spikes.

When you do a new install of Windows, there are usually .net updates involved and those do tend to eat up some CPU at first while some stuff gets done in the background. As to whether Windows 8 is heavier on the CPU, nope, it is not. The behavior you describe might be related to the new install, but it is in no way an issue with Windows 8. I have more than one laptops that I upgraded to Windows 8 and I never saw this behavior, so again, people are fast to blame Windows for higher fan speeds, but looking into what's causing them is really the productive way to go about it. You'll likely find that it's some updates that are compiling post install, the indexing service indexing stuff on a new install and so on.
