    GAH.

It seems that I ruined/deleted some essential windows system files due to long-pressing the power button a few times this week due to a VERY annoying thing at windows shut down where it hangs with a blank 'waiting for xx program to close' message but doing nothing and just freezing in that state (what am I supposed to do when that happens? wait for 8 hours?).

See I thought, oh it's an SSD it's not like HDD (which can lose data/corrupt when you cut the power, right?), but ok I see I was wrong wrong there.

Anyway, I think I've mucked up windows and now I'm trying to fix it.

What's happened is that graphics everywhere in windows have gone all weird, fonts and text sizes wrong and the quality bit blurry and anti-aliasing gone, the desktop background image gone and it's just plain black colour, and most programs can't run and give an APPCRASH upon trying to open them. some basic windows stuff is operational, but no, it appears system restore is damaged too: restoring to any of the states prior to the meltdown, don't work, it gives 'incorrect function 0x80070001' error (followed by 'catastrophic failure 0x8000FFFF' error  ).

So my next option is to repair windows, right? SIMPLE, right? nope :(. It appears that once you install your windows on the MBA, rEFIt (the EFI mod that allows booting from USB drives), cannot properly boot from a windows usb drive but instead ( read here).

So I can't even REPAIR windows! :( :(. I tried System File Checker tool and it fixed some files, and did chkdisk, but the major damage is still unreversed, meltdown undefeated.

so...any ideas, apart from a complete system reinstall? is there any way of repairing windows in this seemingly seriously damaged state of my MBA's windows?

Maybe get a USB dvd drive and repair windows via that? ANYTHING but another system reinstall and partition format :(.

    thank you for your help.
