So I apologize if this is the wrong place. I recently just moved out of the States for work and was not able to bring my desktop with me due to the price of customs exceeding the computer's value. I do not have a personal laptop (yet), but was provided one from my company.

My question is will running applications such as Skype off an external hard drive make changes to the computer and get me in trouble at work? I am talking about bringing home my laptop over the weekends so I can keep in touch with family and friends until I can get a prepaid phone or laptop. I have already installed Skype on the external hard drive from my desktop before I left, but was not sure if it would make changes to the registry or anything when running it off my work computer.

Maybe someone with some more computer knowledge than me could help answer. Thanks in advance.

I do believe skype has a portable app version which wont make any changes to anything. I remember they had one for the U3 usb drives. Could always get a used psp slim for skype if u have wifi lol.

Why don't you ask your new employer if you can install Skype?

You may have to check with your employer. Not sure if they put some security rules to prevent specific (Voice over IP) ports from being used.

These days a lot of machines are locked down such that you can't install anything without the help of IT. As much as you may not want to go about it this way you may want to ask them if you can install Skype.

I didn't like how much of a resource hog Skype is, so I found Skype_3.6.0.244_Lite. The files can be extracted, and I think that they can be ran portably. So, you may be able to run it from a USB drive. Not sure about the ports and voice connections and what not that were previously mentioned though.

as mentioned its best to ask your IT dept or manager.
my hospital lends out laptops for our doctors on call and due to data protection all usb's are blocked unless they have secure hospital encryption and lots of websites like facebook, you tube, skype, msn etc are blocked and all attempted site visits are recorded and can be viewed by your managers.
