    Hi

I did a search but my search-fu is weak so I didn't find anything relevant...

I'm going to upgrade to Vista Ultimate from Vista Home Premium, I've got a backup of my system as it is now running VHP burned to discs, if the Ultimate install isn't to my taste or it goes wrong am I able to put the system back to VHP using my backup (my laptop - an Acer Aspire 9302 has a recovery manager in the boot options that allows for cd/dvd recovery), I could really do without spending all night re-installing all my apps and games.

Also is there anything else I might need to know before upgrading - will I lose what's installed already and have to re-install anyway?

I also have a Genie Backup Manager backup on an external USB HDD that I've made of all my system so could I use that if I lose anything?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice. :)

if you upgrade or reformat, you'll still have to re-install all your programs. Make sure you have all the drivers ready to install after reformat. In order for your genie to back up your settings, you're gonna have to install it again with ultimate.

imho you're not going to be getting much of an upgrade, since its almost the same, except for a couple things, which you probably won't notice/use.

Yeah that's what I was afraid of, I've only just got my system running as I want it, for the mo anyway, and about the only reason I want Ultimate is so I have the backup my whole drive option, that's the only thing I can see worth having.

I don't think I'll bother if I'm going to lose everything - when will M$ make an OS you can just install/upgrade without losing everything

Lucky I haven't actually started to drop the money in M$'s bank account :D

You should be aware of the fact that Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate do not differ much except in the price tag and the added "features" found in Vista Buisness. Save your money, Vista Ultimate really does not offer anything extra, except some supposed buisness security features and data and file managment features that can be easily acheived through open software and open free security suites.

Hmm lucky I asked before buying.

I looked at a couple of reviews on CNET and other places and to be honest I couldn't see much that I don't already have but as my system is OEM and I don't have a Windows disk (one wasn't supplied - serves me right for buying an Acer from Amazon I suppose ) so I thought I should invest in one, so I think I'll go for Home Premium seeing as I already have that installed.

My laptop has been having a few problems recently and I think a clean install is going to be required shortly, mainly cos it's been doing my head in and a reinstall is the quick and easy way to solve the problem, having said that though my system has just decided to play nice, it booted up to the desktop in under 2 minutes, on the last 2 restarts, yay :D

I'm still going to invest in a disk though, just not Ultimate now, but thanks for the advice :)
