One of my favorite apps is Internet Download Manager http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/ After you have downloaded a file, it takes about a minute for a 1gb file to "rebuild" before you can open the file. During this one minute period my computer really slows down (almost to the point of locking up) . I have looked at Task Manager during this "slow down" and do not see any high CPU or memory usage. This same thing happens whether I am using an older Celeron equiped laptop or my T9300 Lenovo. Anybody know why the computer is so bogged down while files are "rebuilding". Would more RAM speed things up??

More RAM will almost always speed things up - how much does your system currently have?

2 gigs ram, but I have owned 6 latops, and all have slowed to a crawl during the rebuild stage. Do you have IDM?

For the record, I don't think RAM is your problem. During the rebuild, it's more HDD access than anything else.

Check your IDM settings, there should be an option about where IDM stores the chunks of data.

AFAIK its normal , because IDM takes all resources it needs to combine the downloaded parts and yes with more ram you might see the difference :D

    I have IDM 5.15
