If you installed Vista x64 you get two versions of IE7. A x32 (x86) and x64 bit. There's also an IE7 for XP. Usually when you download IE7 MS will detect your OS version and download appropriately. Have you tried to unistall the previous version?

well my vista ultimate is 32bit and the ie7 on it worked fine but it suddenly quit working no matter if i used my home wireless network or my office wired broadband or the wireless at starbucks.....arghh and i can't seem to uninstall ie7 at all... using firefox now but most of my internet banking stuff cannot work with firefox only with ie7

Downloading the Add-on "IE Tab" for Firefox will allow you to switch the rendering engine for any tabs of your choice. Using this you could get those internet banking pages working in firefox whenever you need them.
