IE 7 sometimes causes my system to freeze for a period of time, so annoying!

for example, i would attempt to visit a web page that i have visited many times, like msn.com and the system would just freeze up in a way while the hard drive constantly lights up for a period of time, say 30 seconds or so. what the hell is it reading or writing? i have been to the same website many times in the past! cookies are enable and everything is pretty much to default settings. there are no serious spyware issues as i clean my system on a regular basis.

other ie7 pages are not responsive during this freeze interval. so annoying!

I'm not sure what's causing this, but why aren't you using IE8 yet? The security improvements alone are worth upgrading, and maybe it will help with the HDD thrashing.

Are you sure that IE7 is the process which uses the disk? Did you make sure it's the IE7 that's accessing the disk, not other process by looking at the disk ussage from the performance monitor.

i use task manager and that does not state what process is taking up disk space.

what else can it be? i know it's a vauge question but i thought this disk thrashing i am experience with ie7 might be a known issue or something, or at least i am hoping. i do notice other disk thrashing episodes at times but there is no way to check what program might be doing it. i figure maybe it is windows restore making new restore point or something system related.

i thought about doing this but i am one of those that generally hates change. i hated ie7 from ie6 due to the different interface and where buttons were placed, although i got used to it.

Or better yet, stop using IE altogether and get Firefox or Chrome ;)

IE 8 looks almost exactly like 7 so that's a poor excuse. :p Check out Paul Thurrott's review of it for yourself.

Some people just hate chrome and Firefox because of its interface and UI. Also.. chrome and firefox isn't compatible with some websites and online services such as live mesh..etc.

what am i supposed to look at with perfmon? all i see is the disk usage graph but that does not tell me exactly which program is causing hard drive requests.

Click on the disk graph or the little expansion arrow beside the disk row. You'll see which process is using how much disk resource.

Salutations good sir. Please let me help you out here.

The gentleman whose post you quoted, probably meant this -

Kindly open Windows Task Manager. Now gently make your way towards the Performance tab. Whence there, click on Resource Monitor, which you'll see at the bottom. Now, click on Disk, and take the information you need.

I hope this post of mine helped you. I am just a humble man, trying to help anyone who'll give me a chance.

Thank you for giving me a chance.

To the right of the "Disk" bar, there's a triangle on top of the circle button. That's the expansion button that I was referring to. By clicking the "Disk" graph, it'll do the same thing.

Performance Monitor can be opened by going into taskmanager and click the link, go to Windows folder and open perfmon.msc or just type perfmon in the run (windows key + R) window.

i have win xp and maybe my task manager is different than vista but i do not see a resource monitor or disk tab in the performance field.

i cannot get my permon screen to look like that. i took a pic of what i see. i can add a bunch of data to collect besides the three default ones shown, but i cannot find a specific one that tells me which process is using the hard drive. i do not even see that on your picture, it just shows a % of hard drive being used but no way to define which program is using it?
