Recently ive noticed my pc running sluggish everytime IE was running for a while. I opened up task manager to see IE 8 using up well over 1GB of the 2GB's of ram my pc has. It just seems to accumulate and accumulate until my pc has over 90% of its ram gobbled up (confirmed by task manager and the vista sidebar).

This isnt normal and was wondering how to prevent IE from using so much ram.

Wow that is quite the massive memory leak. Are you running any kind of addons with it? Try disabling the accelerators.

Every time you use I.E., God kills a kitten.

Use Firefox and save the kittens.

    No seriously, use Firefox.

I went through and disabled all of the accelerators and the add-ons that are running seem to be pretty standard like java, anto-virus, microsoft stuff. But it didnt seem to have much effect.

Yer I have firefox, but i just seem t like IE better, just as a personal preference.

If you like IE you may like Avant: http://www.avantbrowser.com/
It's based of the IE engine, a little faster, amazing built-in popup blocker, URL shortcuts and plenty of other useful features included in it.

How many tabs do you have open when you hit 1GB? I can easily hit 512mb of RAM on Firefox with 8-10 tabs open. Seriously, other than security I don't find Firefox a whole lot better. IE/Avant still excel in page rendering and compatibility among websites I visit at least.

Is this on XP or Vista? And how many web pages do you have opened in IE?

Anyway IE 8 is ram-hungry… with 7 documents open, mine is using about 200 MB. But… 1 gb is definitely excessive. Are you sure that's all being used by IE? If so, there could be a script on one of the pages that eating your memory.

Try using "IE 8 no addon" and see if the memory leak is still there. Normally.. IE8 uses about the same amount of ram as FF.

I think you might have spy/adware. Try running a scan.

I ran a full system scan using norton and then using spysweeper but nothing showed up other than some small tracking cookies.

And the problem still persists unfortunately.

    Try scanning with malwarebytes.
