I have a question for you folks...

I was running IE8 and Opera at the same time. When trying to access Gmail from IE8, I can't seem to get through. However, using Opera I can. My question is why and how does this happen? How can one browser reach one site while another (in a near simultaneous timeframe) cannot?

    Thanks

Edit: I should add that in all other matters, IE8 has been a good experience. Opera, of course, has been a longtime favourite of mine.

Could be an IE8 bug? Can you access Gmail other times with IE8?

To kick off the discussion, what message in IE8 did you receive, if any? Was it just blank, 404, unsecured, etc.? Does it happen at home, on wifi, out and about? Can you double check that it is in fact a live connection by pinging Gmail? You may want to reset IE8 to no add-on and defaults as well.

    /rant on/
Then again it could be Microsoft's wonderful Internet Explorer compliance adherence, the coders will know what this means...
    /rant off/

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. MS just left itself open to it :D

Anyways, hope there is an answer to this find.

Edit: Crash, you beat me to it :D

Yea, knowing what message you got is helpful. Trying with no add-ons and accelerators disabled is a good idea.

It's better in IE8, but still far behind other browsers. I can access Gmail just fine with IE8 though, so it's probably not due to that.

    :D

Most of the times, yes...but sometimes, when trying to access Gmail with IE8, there is no error message, it seems like the browser is trying to access the site indefinitely - that small round circle keeps going round and round, if you know what I mean.

I should stress that this does not happen all the time...meaning most of the time, IE8 connects to Gmail effortlessly. Then there are some occasions where what I described happens - these are the occasions when I fire up Opera, which invariably connects, albeit a bit slowly. I avoid using FF, so I won't know how that works with Gmail.

It doesn't sound like an IE8 thing then.

OK. But I was wondering how one browser can access a site (a mainstream site at that) while another cannot - within approximately the same timeframe.

    Maybe it's your internet.
Try using opera and gmail for a while and see if it happens to Opera as well. Sometimes your internet doesn't route your data to google's server thus no webpage is displayed.

That is exactly what I am asking. Does not happen with Opera.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I am always on a wifi connection - be it at home or outside.

Does it not happen with opera 100% of the time? The problem that I think you're experiencing is random. It's should only be a 1 time thing. A data resend will solve the problem. But opening opera and try the site again or refrsesh IE8 will give you the same result.

I use both Opera and IE8, and Gmail works great for me on both. It's not IE8's fault.

(CBF to read all the replies, so if it's been said earlier, my apologies.)

    Well the secret is..

You are using wifi to connect your laptop.

Your passphrase or key is not 128 bits.
What is 128 bits? It means 16 characters either alphabets or numbers.
    eg. sh3kd7saldffad4r

Go to your wireless router setup page.

    Change to 128 bits key.

No problem accessing gmail or any other websites that require a 128 bits secure connection anymore using IE or any other browsers..

Well...that is interesting! But, the point is that I am using a 128 bits key. Anyways, I think it is one of those inxplicable anomalies.
