    Disclaimer:

I am not sure if talking about ad-blocks is allowed on this forum. I tried to look in the FAQ but did not find any reference to this. If this topic is not allowed, Mods, please delete the post. Thanks.

So, I am looking for an ad block program (free) for my installation of IE9b. I tried Simply Ad block which seems to be somewhat ineffective. I also tried the 30-day trial version of Ad block Plus, but that too has some issues. What I am looking for is an add-on which is - in comparative terms - as effective as the Ad block that is available as an extension for Google's Chrome (I got this from the Chrome App Store as a free install). Can you make some suggestions?

    Thanks

I have used and did not find Simple-Adblock very effective.

And, as far as I can see from the link that you have provided, superadblock does not support IE8/IE9.

    Additionally...

    Thanks

Can't see what the problem is with talking about adblockers - why the disclaimer? (if I couldn't use them I'd just stop using larger parts of the web... Youtube springs to mind... and my favourite newspapers - NY Times, ZeitOnline)

    Anyway:
Already on IE8 people have suggested using the inprivacy filter to block advertisements - only issue is the thing resets itself on every restart.

If you could import the FF Easylist into the inPrivacy module in IE8/9 I'd say your good to go.

    Edit:
    Simple Adblock uses Easylist... ok...

    Use a hosts file.

Will block all internet served ads in every application on your PC.

I'd rather use a local proxy like Privoxy instead.

Thanks. This looks like an interesting option. I will look into it.

There are bunches of different ways to do what you want, but they all require active maintenance/config checking.

A DIY setup requires that YOU do the maintenance work, a service or proxy setup puts the maintenance work on an outside/external entity.

There is always the chance that any solution will start to block ads/popups that you really want need to see. To get around this you need to be able to look as current blocking activity and verify that it is what you want.

Security isn't a brick wall you can walk away from. It takes active involvement.
