If not, what is in Aero?
-
What is Aero in? Anything that's more expensive than Basic.
If you're a student of computer science, maybe engineering, in an institution of higher education, you might qualify for MSDN AA (Microsoft Developer's Network Academic Alliance), which might get you Windows Vista Ultimate for free or little cost. -

its windows key + tab

Oh sorry, misunderstood what you asked.
This link should clear things up for you then. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/details/aero.mspx
Basically, instead of the opaque windows, things that aren't maximized have a glossy glass look to them. -
I've read there is a way to enable it in Basic in the registry but don't have basic so haven't messed with it.

Home Basic have Aero Express
Home Premium/Business/Ultimate have Aero Glass -
That said, I really can't quite grasp the need for Home Basic. It's too basic, even for the average user, and the fact that the interface looks different is sure to confuse beginners who are switching between the various versions of Vista. -

the thing your talking about is called 3d flip, I dont know if its in basic or not, Id not use basic even if I got it for free, its like buying a new version of xp....
If you want to save money and not get a higher version, do what I did. Get a upgrade version instead of full. If you are in school, have a friend in school, or are handy with photoshop and can make a school id.... the academic version of home premium upgrade is only 70$ shiped. Its the same as the full version but cheaper. -
Enable the Aero Interface in Windows Vista Home Basic
. Haven't tried my self, therefore don't know if it works or not.
-
I've used Home Baisic, Home Premium and Ultimate and for my uses at least Home Premium and Ultimate have no advantage over Home Basic. -
Home basic doesn't looks as slick
-
The intention of Home Basic is so that it can be used on low end budget machines, and by people that just want an OS and not all the eye candy.
Like me... -
Things were so much less complicated with XP product versions...you had Home and Professional, and it was fairly clear that Home was for the average user and that Professional was for businesses or power users. Now the average user has to choose between Home Basic, Home Premium, or Ultimate, businesses have to choose between Business or Ultimate, and power users have to choose between Home Premium and Ultimate. Ack.

It's rather simple really:
XP Home -> Vista Home Basic
XP Media Center -> Vista Home Premium
XP Professional -> Vista Business/Enterprise (anyone needing Enterprise has an IT staff who are paid enough to figure out if they need this edition)
Vista Ultimate doesn't really have an XP equivalent... but it's kind of like the union of Media Center and Professional. -

Well almost everyone has some version they can upgrade from, right? Unless this is a new PC (or a Mac) in which case the OEM versions (available from newegg among other places) are about the same price as the upgrade versions.

From what you say its illegal to use it unless your a student. So I guess that means if you buy it now as a student, when your done with school you have to burn it and buy the full version right?
NO, you dont because you were a student when you bought it. So if a friend is a student and buys it and gives it to you thats not violating anything.
A pirate is somebody that steals something for free, I am just a smart shopper MS doesnt care they got there money so why should you?
Dont be jealous because for 70$ I got what you maybe paid like 230$ for...
