Hi, I was fixing a friends computer earlier because they had something called 'myPC Backup' that wouldn't move from being the top window without being paid for. I then did the following actions:-
I stopped this starting by using task manager and killing the process then msconfig and stopping the start up entry.
I then rebooted the computer into safe mode and ran an up-to-date Spybot, Malwarebytes and MSE. There were a few registry entries from Spybot but that was about it.
I then rebooted the computer and when I went into the start menu to go to control panel to set a back up, I noticed that Malwarebytes icon was missing, I clicked this out of curiosity and I got the message 'program may have been uninstalled or moved' which I knew it hadn't been.
I just though this may have been from the older red 'Malwarebytes' icon so I deleted it as the current blue icon was also present.
I then ran Ccleaner as I always do before a back up or after a scan.
Thinking nothing of it I proceeded to do the back up, everything seemed to be working fine except the back up crashed with a permission error halfway through (separate partition). I left it there as I will bring my external drive over another day and back up to that.
When I got home my friend phoned me and said that her Google Chrome Icon went missing and when she clicked it she got the same message I got. This was really strange as I was using Chrome before I left her house.

    Win Vista 32bit sp2
    MSE antivirus (up-to-date)

I would be glad to hear of any fixes for this, but I think I am probably looking at a system restore or factory restore as it may be a virus that these 3 never detected?!?!.
Sorry for being long winded but thought I better let you know all the details.

    Thanks in advance.

    Perrin.

Definitely sounds like a registry corruption due. Very possible due to a virus. Don't do a system restore. A factory restore is ok as long as it formats the hard drive. That will ensure any traces of viruses are wiped out.
