If I can't format a new laptop, should I just remove programs one by one?

In most new laptops, there will be preinstalled software right from the first boot along with the operating system.

And again, in most cases, you're only given a "recovery CD" which formats your hard drive and reinstalls the operating system WITH the aforementioned software.

If I can't get my hands on a real operating system disc, or do not wish to format, is removing unwated programs one by one through the control panel the best way to go?

I have a Toshiba and only have the recovery CD and something they call the Express Media Player disc. As far as I know, both will install the bloatware I don't want.

    Thoughts?

If you have to you can go and do add/remove. You'll want to get a good registery cleaner like CleanMyPC or RegScrub to get rid of any keys left behind. It would also be a good idea to check your C: Drive for any folders left over.
