Alright, guys. I've asked everybody (from professors, to the head developer of the program I'm trying to install) for help with this, and I have no idea what to do.
I have Windows Vista installed on my laptop. I need to use a program called "Logic 2000": http://logic2k.humnet.ucla.edu/
As you can see, when you go to the download page, it states that you need to have installed the Java Virtual Machine in order for the program to work.
I keep on downloading and installing Java from the link provided, and then I try to install Logic 2000 on top of Java, but the program won't open. It will install correctly, but it won't open-It's behaving as if the virtual machine is not even installed on the computer.
Now, on my desktop, I have XP, and I went through the same procedure-downloading the JVM from the link and and installing it. I noticed that it actually installed on my desktop...meaning that it loaded various files, and was a legitimate installation. Whereas on my vista PC, it simply says "installed successfully", pretty much immediately after you open the installation file. I then installed Logic 2000, and it works fine...on my desktop with XP, that is.
I would really prefer to have the program on my laptop, since I need it for school and such, being limited to doing my homework at a desktop computer is a little bit of a pain.
So, I've come here. If any of you are able to help, I would be very grateful. It might be a little difficult to understand what I'm saying, so if you want, you can just follow the instructions on the download page (It's just a 2 step process) and see how your system reacts to it. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the virtual machine, and not the program...but like I said, I'm at a complete loss.

OK, so what's the prize? I am pretty sure I know the answer.

Oh what the heck you can tell me what the prize is latter, but it better be good.
The problem is the Java Virtual machine they want you to down load is so far out of date that it is laughable. Microsoft no longer offers it and haven't for a LONG LONG time. It is ANCIENT. I doubt it would ever install on Vista.
The only supplier of Java virtual machines these days is Sun after the two of them (Microsoft and Sun) battled it out in court. Go to this page: http://www.java.com/en/download/inc/windows_upgrade_ie.jsp
Then try the Logic 2000 software.

Gary!
I wish you were right! But I already have Sun Java installed. And it still doesn't work. My professors runs it on his laptop, and he runs Vista, so it's not an OS issue. Snapshot:
-
I've noticed when trying to install some older apps on my Vista machine that Vista is enough pickier about security that it doesn't let the app change/install as much as it wants to. Maybe search the net to find out what you need to do in Vista to allow it to install completely.

Gotta love universities that insist on living in the 20th century.
At any rate, if you really can't get it working, there's 2 easy workarounds:
1) Remote desktop from your laptop to your desktop
2) If you can get a copy of XP somehow, use VirtualBox (or VMware, or MS Virtual PC, whatever you like) and install it on the VM instead -
I assumed, all the files were actually copied to the program directory? If the desktop icon is missing, then it sounds like it was a problem with the install.
-
But what happens when you is install Logic 2000, it creates a folder in your main hard drive titled "LSPR". You open that folder, and the application will be there. You just run the .exe, and you're off and running.
However, if you click this Logic 2000.exe icon, and nothing happens, this means there is something wrong with the installation of the Java virtual machine...at least that is what I have been told.
I'm beginning to think this might have something to do with me having service pack 2 installed on here... -
Do you see the program's directory? Click on the .exe file to see if it opens. If it does then the desktop icon has a broken link. You can create a shortcut afterwards. Also see if you can run it as an 'administrator'.
-
This is what happens when you unzip the Logic 2000 file. It creates a folder called "LSPR":
Then, when you go in that folder, you're supposed to open the application here:
Upon clicking this link, Logic 2K should open. But it doesn't do anything...meaning there's something wrong with the Java VM...I think. -
tell me, can what happens when you type 'java' in a command prompt and hit enter? I may know the issue.

I have never heard of a Java app specifically needing the old Microsoft Virtual Machine. I always thought that any java app would run with the Sun engine.
Could it be that the trying to install the old Microsoft engine has hosed the Sun one. Try uninstalling both engines (if the Microsoft one IS showing up in the control panel applet) and then reinstall the Sun engine.

also tell me wht happens when u double click the logic2000.exe which u jst downloaded does it ask u for accepting terms or license,if so tick yes and it will open winzip. use it to unzip to any drive say d drive.in tht drive u should get an "lspr" folder all the files and logic2k.exe. u need to be connected to internet to use logic2k.exe though.
well iam kind of curious it is working for me though i had java installed already.do tell me in detail wht exactly have u done. -
Get Virtualbox or something and run an XP VM on your laptop. The MSJVM is outdated and obsolete (discontinued in 2001, support ended June 30 of this year after an extension), shoehorning it into Vista was never supported AFAIK and may just be impossible. And yes, it was possible to write stuff that only worked properly with the MSJVM, it was an incomplete implementation (why Sun sued...) and had its own quirks.
Also complain to your school - if you're required to use this, they should have a version that runs properly with current operating systems and dependencies like Java. -
Just wondering ... try disabling the antivirus software and/or firewall?
cheers ... -
run both the java and the program install in xp compatibility mode and as administrator.
if you need help running as administrator or in xp compatibility mode, post back -
are you running 64 bit vista? If you are, there is a chance the program requires the 32 bit java runtime. Either uninstall the 64 bit java and install 32 bit java or there is a command you can use when you launch the program to give it the proper path.
-
, so it's easier to put into a virtual machine. I've poked into the files it provides, and it looks like the class files are not even close to properly designed for current JVM's, so you're probably stuck with that antitrust stopped version of the MS JVM.
-
I have run into this problem with an old contact manager used in the real estate industry. Sometimes if I disabled Sun Java in Internet options and then installed MSjava, it would work.
If not, remove Sun JRE, run crapcleaner, reboot, install MSjava, reboot, install program.
Hope that helps -
EDIT: Tried it, step for step, and it didn't change anything. -
Here's snapshots of my control panel applications. Maybe someone can spot a program or codec or something that is interfering with this...
-
Sorry to hear your pain Lunagrey.
Its a shame when it comes to this. Spending more time getting something to work, than actually using it.
I'd go with a vitual machine like VMWare, install W2000 or XP and move on. Obviously you have bitcomet, so you probably have resources for acquiring it.
I cant think of any other solutions besides a dual boot, then that adds more to the matrix of issues/solutions. Sounds like you are somewhat knowledgeable. I would go with the virtual rather than Dual Boot these days.
Best Wishes

i find that winrar works too if its a .rar

Did anyone get the price?
I agree to just use a Virtual Machine to load XP if the software can run with XP. -
Yet another user shafted by Microsoft litigation.
It's all in a day's work! -
Tried it and it works on Windows 7. I installed Sun Java first, it didn't run, so I installed MS Java from your link, restarted, and it runs fine.
Anyways try this: Copy the LSPR folder to your desktop; open command prompt and change to that folder, something likeCode:cd %userprofile%\Desktop\LSPR
Code:wjview -cp logic.zip edu.ucla.phil.logic.LogicProgram
Run this tooCode:%windir%\System32\wjview -cp logic.zip edu.ucla.phil.logic.LogicProgram
If you can figure this out, you deserve a prize!
