Sorry to make two threads in the same day but my other one is obviously going to die and this is a much bigger problem, why the hell are these updates not working? I've done a scan with security essentials which found no viruses, my laptop is relatively new and I haven't even downloaded anything that I would consider suspicious!

What do I do? I need these updates not only for security but for testing purposes.

If your laptop is as new as you say, did it come pre-installed with a lot of software?
If yes, then it's possible some of that bloatware is inhibiting the updates from properly installing.

Furthermore, you can try downloading/installing/updating/scanning the system with Malwarebytes.

I would also recommend you go to Safe Mode and run the scans with MBAM and MSE from there.
MSE while very good, at times can still miss a few things (just like any other paid or non-paid program), so using MBAM as an on-demand scanner would be recommended.

But this issue is quite possibly related to the bloat (if it exists) in your OS (my sister and numerous other people had similar issues and it came down to the bloat).

How would I go about fixing the issue? It's an alienware laptop so it came with quite a lot installed, such as the command centre.

Will I need to do a fresh install? That would really suck.

Try rebooting and then again try to install updates.

I have had them fail then work - the other thing that springs to mind is that your internet connection dropped - it would then install just the downloaded ones and display the rest as failed.

You might also want to try "sfc /scannow" from an elevated command prompt if it still fails to install - this checks and repairs/replaces corrupt system files.

I've rebooted like 20 times and tried to check for updates, it finds a framework 4.0 which no way am I installing.

I'll try the sfc/ scannow, thanks.

edit: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I've had that happen before and it was do to what update MS thought I needed first so it aborted the rest. If I later tried they would successfully update. Have you tried updating since then? :)

I click check for updates and it only finds one, which isn't something I need

This is really starting to get on my nerves lol.

Framework 4.0 and you are not installing it?
    Why?
I usually install all of the updates (sans the gpu drivers and language packs).
Missing some of these could result in failed updates because they require newer frameworks to work with.

Anyway ... a fresh install might be an extreme option ... but it certainly would clean up everything on the latpop and give you a clean start.

Next time it shows a bunch, just go down the list one by one. Right click the ones you don't want and check hide. And you can also hide them permanently so it will not ask you to DL them again. Doesn't really help your issue a whole lot, but maybe your failed attemts is tied to one of the updates somehow.

Then right click and hide. Do not notify me anymore of these updates-blah, blah. Then try it again.
And, just a note-your pics are too big for the forum per forum rules. Just letting you know bc I got dinged for it a while back.

Sorry I'm still getting used to the 1080 resolution, the pictures don't seem that big to me lol.

And I don't want Framework 4.0 because developers hate it and it sucks, can anyone please help me fix this problem?!
