So I've downloaded iTunes onto my new Asus. How do I import all the music from my iPod that was put on the iPod with my PowerBook? When I select Import from the File menu, it shows up as Drive F and asks if I want to reformat. I said NO in fear that this would wipe my iPod hard drive out. Is that correct? Anyone know how to do this or can it only be formated for EITHER Mac or Windows, but not both?

As best I can tell,Windows formatted iPods can be read by win and mac machines, but Mac formatted iPods can ONLY be read by Macs. I don't understand why iPods don't just default to FAT32, which, to my knowledge, can be read/written to by Win, Mac, and Linux. Wouldn't that just make life easier for everyone involved?

you may have to yank them off the ipod from the mac, then put them on some other media like dvdrs or an external HD. then import them onto the asus.

semi related; i ditched itunes and went with the ipod plugin for winamp. it will also pull from an ipod, but i don't think it will do it for a mac formatted one.

That looks like a good program, but I'm not sure if it will work. Really, all I want to do is put my music on my Asus, somehow someway. Unfortunately the PowerBook doesn't have a DVD burner.

According to: http://www.copypod.net/helpv7.php#130 that MacOpener program says "Early generation iPods" ... I have an iPod Photo. :(

Here's a thought... what if you imaged your iPod onto your PowerBook, and then format it to be FAT32. Put the files you want to transfer onto the iPod, which now is nothing more than a removable storage device. Copy files onto Asus. Go back to the PowerBook and write the image back to the iPod.

i use the podutil program. just google "podutil" and you'll find it. the only thing thats crappy is that if you use the free version it makes you click something every 49 songs so that you can't leave the computer. after importing 4000 songs it's incredibly irritating. but it works!! remember to set your pod to "enable disk use" under preferences

But... isn't the big problem here that the iPod is formatted for Mac, which Windows can't read?

An iPod can work with either OS, and can be reformatted to work with either, as well. My gf gave her previous generation iPod, which she used with a Mac, to my son, who uses it with his Windows machine.
