Basically when I go to search, type something in, press enter, nothing appears. Ctrl E does nothing. I've tried several combinations in related to indexing and deindexing etc. and nothing works. I thought I must have knocked off an important process when I was going through them, but there's nothing disabled related to search at the moment.

This is absolutely crazy. This is pretty much a new vista install as well.

It's an Acer 6920G. It came with google desktop on it which I disabled so maybe that's something to do with it. I tried turning it on again but then it just tries to search the internet for it. Useless. When I select "Search Desktop" it finds nothing, it doesn't even try.

Have you tried system restore? You may have corrupt a system file. You could try running the Vista Repair Utility when you put in your Vista disc and boot into it.

What other things did you "tweak?" It's entirely possible that you "tweaked" more than you intended to. Also, trying system restore is a good suggestion, too.

Make sure you have the Start menu search enabled in the properties, do this by:

On the Start Orb, right click and go to Properties, Click on the Start Menu Tab and then click Customize, a new window should open. Scroll down until you find Search Files and then choose one of the 3 options available "Don't Search For Files, Search Entire Index and Search this user's files"

Run "services.msc", and make sure the "Windows Search" service is Enabled.
(You may need to reboot for any changes to take effect.)
