I had 10 gigs free on my HDD running win xp sp1. I extracted this 8 gig winrar .iso file which took quite some time but eventually it finished and I heard the system sound 'ding' to signify that. So I went to where it should have been extracted (since the rar was on my E drive, it should have been by default in E:/uresources1/ but no folder was there. I looked into some of my other common folders for the 8 gig iso file but nothing was there.

So I thought, maybe it just didn't extract properly or at all. I checked my drive space... and I had 2 gigs left!!!! So that means it did extract and its taking up space on my drive somewhere. How could something like this happen? I'm using winrar 3.51. I also searched my entire 250 Gig drive for anything ending in iso.. but I got nothing.

Do a search on the drive for files > 7GB.

Did you check show hidden files in folder options?

Check the drive with chkdsk to make sure its not some kind of error.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will do another scan for files greater than 7 gigs.

I'm getting treesize pro now.. maybe that will show me the biggest files on the drive automatically. If it just has folder sizes that won't be too helpful because I already have a plugin that does that.

    Show hidden files is on.

I'll try chkdsk after the other solutions. Thanks guys!

EDIT: Using treesize pro now. Wow this is a freaking awesome program.

You searched for .ISO and didn't find anything, so maybe it dumped it to some arbitrary temporary file and aborted the process when it saw it didn't have enough space to then copy it to the specified destination file. That's the way IE treats downloaded files.

Just run a search for files > 7GB. You may just be able to rename that temporary file to .ISO and be done.

Interesting hypothesis Rich, I'll try that thanks! I'll report back with my results here.

Why are you extracting an ISO? If you just want to view the files contained within it, use Daemon tools or something to mount the image. No additional disk space required.

I'm not extracting an ISO. The ISO was extracted from a rar file and now I'm tyring to find where the ISO is so I can burn it or mount it and then delete it.

Ok I don't think the searching by size is working. I set it to be at least 7000000 KB (7 Gigs) and left the name field blank and now its pulling up files that are like 1 kb big?

EDIT: I think the 'at least' and the 'at most' options are mixed up because now I just selected 'at most' and its not pulling up files (seems like its now searching for files 'at least' that big).

    I FOUND IT!!!!!!!

WTH it was in my utorrent folder!? I have no clue how it got in there... I guess winrar somehow put it in there. Thats insane. I just used treesizepro and noticed a big program files folder and it happened to by utorrent and then when I looked into that folder sure enough the folder was sitting there.

Thanks to everyone for the help!!!! Especially paper_wastage for suggesting this great program. I recommend anyone who doesn't have it to get it.

Let me get this straight...you went out and spent $49.99 on a program to find a file?

windows xp...by default needs approximately 20% free hard drive space to run properly...if you was pushing a 250gig h/d down to 10 gigs left...i'd bet you was having slow boot-up time as well as a few other probs...i can't even guess where your file ended up...but if i was you...i'd do some tidying up on the drive...or invest in another drive to use as a slave for storage...imo...partitioning is another good option...my set-up...four partitions...C:\ is for O.S. and drivers only...D:\ is my documents...even formatting C:\ never writes over saved documents...E:\ is my program directory...F:\ is a small 5gig partition all TEMP/TMP/and Temporary Internet Files are directed there...so when backing up i only b/u C and E...makes defragging much faster...takes about 2 seconds to defrag E...since TEMP and TMP, and my Temporary Internet Files are directed there...thats the partition that gets fragged the most...

Edit: didn't notice that you found the file...but the above still follows...you're headed for a crash if you push your drive space farther...

That's a nice little bit of freeware - is it on the stickied list at the top of the forum?

In terms of where WinRAR put the file, did you originally d/l it through torrent?

Yes I did. It was a private torrent from a friend. I used utorrent.

A#1: My drive situation was temporary now I'm back up to about 20 gigs free thanks so much for your effort. I should be close to maybe 30 gigs after I burn a few more things.. but I will probably never have 20% free. I have been running this drive for several years now without trouble (Western Digital). Partitioning doesn't really seem advantageous to me unless you have a really massive drive (500 to 1 TB) in which case some partitions might help especially so you can defrag/format only certain sections but your setup seems quite fragmented for my taste.
