I've got a HP Pavilion dv6000z notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it. The notebook has an AMD Dual Core processor & 2GB system memory. I've got a 2nd partition which is unused, no info/data is on it so I thought I might be able to install XP on it. However, when I tried installing XP, I got "unknown hard error \ systemroot \ system 32 \ ntdll.dll". This is after it detects my hardware & just before the setup begins after booting into the CD. Anyone installed XP on a 2nd partition with Vista already installed on the machine? Or, does anyone know how to solve this issue? According to Everest Ultimate Edition I have a SCSI hard drive.![]()

I find it's better to install the older OS first. You might be experiencing issues with the SATA drivers, which the XP CD lacks and are needed to install XP on a notebook with a SATA hard drive.

Yeah but I'm not looking to format my hard drive. I really wouldn't want to. Is there any other way of going about this?

Try to hide Vista partition first before installing XP at the other partition.

u can use vista disk management and shrink the vista volume down to give xp 25-30gigo partition.
search on "XP installation after Vista" will give u many good guides as how to proceed. It takes a bit more attention since Vista is already installed, but it is a no brainer. Make sure that u have all related XP drivers on hand first before proceeding (especially the sata driver). Have fun.
