If you were only given the upgrade disk, you cannot. Acer generally doesn't you a full Windows install disk. You would need to use whatever restore disks it asked you to generate from the first bootup of the system

Agreed. Acer will not give you a PURE Windows Installation Disc.
Acer will probably give you some Discs which is known as Recovery Disc and Driver/Application Disc.
Recovery Disc is used to do re-installation of OS(Vista) but with Bloatware(Acer build-in software and some useless programs as well as important drivers).
Driver/Application Disc contained all the drivers/software/application needed for you laptop model included bloatware/crapware.

So, if you plan for a PURE Windows Installation. You need to have a Windows Installation Disc. You can get it from Microsoft and it is cheap because you have the license already. You don't need to buy the license.
If you want completely free, you can download it from torrent or any website which provides the Windows Installation ISO. Burn it to a Disc, install and activate(using your license key) your Windows. It have both 64bit and 32bit version(look carefully when you download), but they share the same license key(so no worry). You can have 64bit/32bit(choose 1) Windows OS with your license key.
Or if your friend have the Windows Installation Disc(Ask your friend to know it is 64bit or 32bit), you can borrow the disc. Install the Windows and activate the Windows.

I will suggest you to use 32bit Windows OS, if you're not familiar with 64bit.
I don't like 32bit OS, lower performance. Sick of it.

There is a very well written guide in the Lenovo forum that tells you how to do a clean vista instal, see link below. I have never attempted it myself but many others have. It is focused on Lenovo but has info that will help you. One thing I'm not sure about is where you'd download your drivers from, Lenovo has them all on their website for download, I don't know about Acer.

I'd recommend using a disk image program like Acronis TrueImage Acronis.com, or Norton ghost (if they stilll make this i'm not sure) so you can restore the harddrive to its current state incase you have any problems.

    Quote from the guide:
What is the "Anytime Upgrade" DVD? Most people think this DVD is just to do an "upgrade" as the name implies. This DVD is actually a Vista installation DVD. It contains EVERY version of Vista on the single DVD. There are two "anytime upgrade" DVDs. One for ALL 32-bit Vista versions and one for ALL 64-bit Vista versions.

Yes, that is a very popular thread on the Lenovo forum. Over 100 pages of posts now. Apparently there are a lot of Lenovo owners who obsess about doing clean Vista installs. But it looks like there are plenty of other notebook owners who'd like to do clean installs too so it benefits them too.
