    Start/control panel/system/advanced system settings/startup and recovery/
There is a tab that allows you to change default start-up o/s

Do to have access to a vista disk.

If so, run the disk, then when it loads (past language selection), click repair, then there should be an option for startup repair, if you do this, it should repair the vista bootloader, and put XP on the list aswell.

Guys do some reading.. XP is way older than Vista, it doesnt recognize it.. It completely overwrites the boot loader with its own one, which only supports pre-xp operating systems. You'll have to get a tool to edit the bootloader like EasyBCD..

    Do more reading here:

Some people really need to just type in a few words in a search box sometimes instead of being dumb and making a new thread with something that is a common 'issue'

I did myne recently you need to download the vista recovery disk which I found in an asus dual boot thread. Once you have vista back up and running use easy bcd as mentioned above to create a new option in vista's boot loader.

    Vista Recovery Disc - http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
Take the first step towards installing vista the look on the bottom left you will see a link to repair, do the repair andvista will be gd to go then use easy bcd.

Where did you install ubuntu's boot loader? I always do it on the boot partition and if thats the case all you need todo is point it to the proper partiton. Cant hurt to try different ones if you dont know.

it doesnt have a bootloader. it uses the vista bootloader. I installed it with wubi so it just sits on the C drive with Vista. theres a bootable file in it somehwere but iunno what its called and how to apply it in EasyBCD

Hmmm not sure how to help you there. But if you do a future install your best off having ubuntu install the boot loader on the root/boot partition of the install and then using easy bcd to modify vista's boot loader to point to it.

Its really simple that way, before apps like easy bcd some of us used NTLDR to boot an image file of a grub/lilo boot floppy to load linux, not needed anymore.
