Ok here is my question I have a Dell studio 15 laptop. My friend has an inspiron 17. He got his a few months after mine so it was loaded with 7. Is it possible for me to instal 7 as an upgrade on my lappy using the 7 restore disc he has or is that not possible.

His disc will have the wrong drivers in it, and your BIOS does not have the proper "signature" (I don't know the correct term) for Windows 7 to activate.

Windows XP installed on my brothers Sony Vaio from my Inspiron 9300. It never asked for a key or rejected the disc or anything. I don't know how Dell's restore discs work now though.

You could always buy a copy if windows 7 ($30 if you're a student), but even if you install it through the restore disks you might have problems with 2 computers using the same key. Although if you do end up buying a license, I would recommend a clean install rather than using his restore disks. To get a copy of Windows 7(You still need a key) http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=428068 .
