Hi, guys. I'm a long time lurker but this is my first post.

I just ordered my daughter the new Dell Mini 9 netbook with a 16gb SSD. It also has a memory card reader.

What I'd like to do is buy her a 16gb SDHC and install a few games and other apps onto the SDHC instead of the SSD.

My question is... Will this work? As long as I change the install path when installing?

You should be ok with the average SDHC, but I myself would make sure I'm getting one with a high read & write speed. Most concerned with the write speed as even the lowest read speeds on a SDHC is adequate.

Yeap! Works fine. I had an 8GB SDHC Class 6, I used for program storage and multimedia playback on my eeepc.

Thats great to hear. Thanks guys! I'm getting her a couple of Barbie, Disney Princess games as well as the Sponge Bob typing tutor. And she really digs Spore. I figure all that should come close to filling the SD card while leaving her core HD fairly roomy.

I found the Transcend 16GB SDHC CARD (SD 2.0 SPD CLASS 6)[/URL] on Amazon for $39 and has a very high buyer rating.

Thats a nice price! I have used Transcend media for years with very good reliability. I have 2 old non-sdhc 2gb Transcend cards that took a beating over the years used in my Nikon D50 and are still goin strong. One even took a trip through the laundry. Both wash and dry, with all data still intact. Granted, generally the nature of flash memory permits accidents like these as long as it has sufficient drying time, but I was surprised the casing held up to our "flames from hell" dryer. :D

Awesome! SD cards are one piece of technology that I really hope and think is here to stay. And they keep getting larger capacitys and lower prices.

Thanks for the help, guys. This really reassures me that I'm doing the right thing. I got the Mini-9 with XP and the 16gb ssd for $450. A christmas present for my 7-year old daughter. This is THE present, I should say.

I'm also thinking about getting a Mini 9 for a X-mas present for my mother.

If she doesnt have a laptop, she'll love it. I'd get one for myself but I think the keyboard would be too small for my big hands. And it's perfect size for my 7-year old.

So just to stay on topic, I can install games on to the SDHD card and not expect any problems when running them? No lag?
