I already have the Home edition, but it was just a borrowed one and the grace period has run out.
So now I'm installing XP Pro, do I have to reformat?

Yes.

Yes, it's a completely different installation so you have to do it fresh. It's not an upgrade where you keep the initial OS intact and you just add an upgrade.

Aw **** :/ Better break out the DVD-RWs. What's a good way of backing everything up?
Would I be better off using Tiny XP if I'm reformatting? Anyone know where I can get it from? -
Hello? Need help backing stuff up...
-
How bout you get an external drive? Or setup a small partition to install xp on while you keep the rest of the files...
-
You could backup online, Mozy ( www.mozy.com) and Xdrive ,my favorite( www.xdrive.com) both offer free backup services.
-
The cheapest way to back up is simply to burn all your files on to a CDs DVDs.
As with reformatting, you need to install the relavent drivers after reformatting. -
Erm, i thought it is possible to do an in place upgrade from XP home to XP pro? it's been 4 years since i remembered them.
-
Yes, you can do an upgrade from XP Home > Pro. I know as I did it last year
You can upgrade to Pro from any previous OS except MCE
But I think the consensus is still to do a proper install to ensure everything is perfect. Something about potential conflicts
On another note, nice forum name!^^
Installing WinXP Pro...
