Go to talk.google.com to get their free (no ads) istant messenger client based onthe Jabber protocol. With a click of the mouse you can get a voice connection which sounds very clear imo.
It is pretty slick, albeit slim on the features (just came out).
Go ahead and add me if you want to test it out..... my username is [email protected]
You need to have a Gmail account to join, so let me know if you need one as I have like 50 invites.

nice find
... I was wondering when google will take over the chat world
... BTW the Jabber protocol is pretty solid, so this should be good!

I've been using Skype for 6+ months (my company uses it extensively), but I'd like to try the Google service for comparison. So you need a Gmail account to sign up, eh? Mind sending me an invite, Soldat?

what are the pros and cons for the google instant messenger??...i don't feel like using it unless i know the pros and cons for it..and i think i have a gmail account, tho i'm not sure

i don't know about google apps running on my machine anymore seeing how they've become a clearinghouse for marketing; i.e., they log everything you do with the danger being that info will be sold in order to tailor ads for the users.
i'll stick with trillian. -

i tried google's IM "hello" and its kinda weird. they leave such a little space for typing window and then this huge space for sending pictures x.x i mean come on lol i dont sign on to send pictures as the focus. unless there is a way to shrink or turn off that extra space.

That is not the IM client that was just released. "Hello" is the one that they bought when they bought out the company that made Picasa image organizer. Like you figured out, it is for sending pictures.
The other, AIM/MSN-like IM client is available at talk.google.com -
