I just installed IRST 9.6.0.1014 for my asus a42jv29 which uses
Intel(R) 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller
as i read that i needed it for my Intel X25-M gen2 80GB SSD.
Now there's a Intel Rapid Storage Technology application in my start menu...which gives me a GUI with various functions when i open it. THere's also an IAStorIcon.exe and IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe inserted into my startup. Can I disable those without fear of TRIM support being taken away?
And if the IAStorIcon startup process is indeed necessary, is it ok for me to enable it on Asus FastBoot so that it loads later?
Thanks in advance!

AFAIK, you can remove those programs.
-
thanks for the reply!
So you're saying that TRIM will remain active even if I remove those processes? How about the Intel Rapid Storage SERVICE? -
Without deinstall you just can set the service inactive and delete the GUI from startup via msconfig or ccleaner or something else.
I would suggest to upgrade to IRST 10.0.0.1046. -
dang...didn't know there's a newer version. Gonna try it right away...hope it's stable. And after that i'll remove the services and startup. thanks for the advice.
Side question...my firmware version is 2CV102HA. Would there be any obvious advantage in updating it to 02HD? Because i read that i need to burn into a cd which is quite troublesome... -

Thanks namaiki;
WIth regards to IRST 10.0.0.1046, i caught an alarming part of the readme notes:
1. The system must contain one of the Intel controllers listed in
section 1 above and one of the following processors:
- Intel(R) vPro
- Intel(R) Celeron
- Intel(R) Pentium
Whereas the official IRST 9 from intel site says
1. The system must contain an Intel(R) Core(TM), Intel(R) Core(TM)2,
Intel(R) Pentium(R), Intel(R) Xeon(R), Intel(R) Atom(TM),
or Intel(R) Celeron(TM) branded processor and one of the Intel
products listed in section 1 above.

I've been running IRST 10.0.0.1046 for a while now. I didn't really find it any better or worse.
Something interesting:
iaStor.sys (from IRST) is 428KB, msahci.sys (the generic Microsoft driver that comes with Windows) is 30KB. (assuming only the .sys file really matters) -
and it contains the same statements as you found in IRST 9. -
Regarding the size of IRST 1046, it went down from 529KB(9.6.4.1002 and 9.6.5.1001) and 433KB(10.0.0.1043beta) to 428Kb for X64.
Another aspect is the logic and optimization of the code. -
