    Hello forum members,

I'm having a strange issue with my USB ports; basically my Logitech MX518 mouse will occasionally stop working. The optical device will stop tracking intermittently and I will sometimes get a "USB device plugged in" sound from Windows. This is pretty disruptive for my work and it doesn't occur consistently. Things I've tried:

    - using different ports
    - disabling USB selective suspend setting in power management
    - reinstalling USB devices via device manager
    - using the mouse on different computers (no issues)

I'm currently testing to see if this problem occurs when other devices are also plugged in (ex, external USB HD), but this mouse has been working perfectly for 2 years across a variety of operating systems. Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

    Thanks!

    I think it's the mouse.

I'm open to that possibility, it's just that testing on other computers hasn't resulted in these problems. I'll keep testing for further problems, but there are many forum threads out there that report similar USB issues with Windows 7.

PS: what's up, fellow Romanian!

So far I haven't had issues with USB ports and Windows 7, but that doesn't mean anything in particular.

Is there any way that you could install Vista and check for the problem? Because you should be able to rule out the OS or the mouse.

Also, you might want to double check for the latest drivers. Make sure you have the lastest chipset drivers, and (if applicable) Dell's Notebook System Software installed. NSS is required on some laptops for proper functionality.

    Hi Greg,

I've looked at your suggestions, and I have used the mouse across many different systems with varying operating systems without any issues (PowerEdge 1300 server w/ XP, Optiplex GX280 with Ubuntu and Windows Server 2008).

Regarding Dell NSS, it appears that Dell's NSS is listed for the 1535 and contains the following fix: KB936003 which is a cumulative roll-up update for USB issues on Vista. However, this update was issued 2 years ago with Service Pack 1 and I'm doubt if it's necessary to install it on Windows 7; it is not listed as an applicable OS for the update. Apart from that, NSS contains nothing else for USB-related functionality. Let me know whether you think it's worth trying this update and why.

Regarding the chipset drivers, the driver from Dell's website is for 64-bit Vista and seems to be quite old; I looked on Intel's website, but I can't really find drivers for the GM965 chipset: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...=Intel®+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility

Should I just use Vista 64-bit drivers off Intel's website? To be honest, I'm not sure what driver to go for for the GM965!

    Thanks for the help.

I got the same issue with G5, no mouse drivers, win7 x64 pro, mouse cuts out for a second, sensitivity light resets, then it come back to life.

Only happens during gaming however, so i think it is chipset / video driver related

You can run the setup.exe found within the zip file. You could also download the file to your desktop and update individual system device drivers (like the Intel 965GM, USB controller, etc) from the device manager. Right click the device and click "Update driver", browse to the extracted zip file, Windows will update the driver if necessary.

Just reporting back, but it appears that installing chipset drivers has not solved the problem. Just a few hours ago the laser in my MX518 turned off for a few seconds. Any more ideas?

I know you said your moused works with other computers, but have you tried that recently?

It might be because your batteries are low. Have you checked the batteries in your mouse?

No, the MX518 is a wired gaming mouse. Just recently I switched to an MX1100 Revolution wireless mouse by Logitech with fresh batteries, and I recently had a USB failure again. It does seem to be either a problem with the laptop itself or the operating system.
