    Hey everyone,

I seem to have one of those puzzling issues. I reformatted my hdd, and installed all the drivers, upgrading some, but for LAN I am using the stock ones. It seems that after a couple hours of use, the internet for browsers stop working, but ping through cmd still gives me results. It is not heat as the internal heat is very very low because I am just surfing the web. I can post any information needed. Thank you for your help.

Do you lose your IP address? Does your router disconnect? You get weird flashing lights? Gremlins chewing your DSL wire?

There could be a thousand reasons why. Normally, if it happens after a few hours, it is just the internet being the internet. The next time it disconnects, look at the lights on your router. Try to isolate the problem and see where your connection is being lost. Is it between your computer and router? or Router and Modem?

or it might also be an issue between the computer keyboard and the chair! :)

I have tried Wireless as well, and everyone hooks up correctly. Vista does not register any issues and both my router and modem continue to work; lights are all standard and my other computer through the router gets internet. O, by the way, Internet Explorer is also included. I just can't understand why I can ping google, yahoo, etc. and get feedback, but through a browser I get nothing.

interesting. you can ping em but the browser does not load the data. Heh, on the company network that would be a bandwidth or network load issue, but at a home that is unlikely.....

I know, I was thinking it was a service, etc. but everything is in order and running smoothly. The ping is the thing that really pisses me off. I am uncertain where to go with this. If I find to be even more prominent, then I feel the only option is reinstall os. Maybe I should run the Vista recovery cd and have it do another check. Gar, it seems I come up with this really odd issues, I wish I could be normal, with normal issues.

could you clarify a bit more about the "internet for browsers stopped working"?
. pages could no longer be opened?
. all sites? or only a fews?
    . server error messages?
. maybe not relevant, but did it happen to ALL browsers that u tried?

    cheers ...

Everything you said is correct. It says "Loading" and never did. This is true for Firefox, IE, and even Chatzilla. My Ping via cmd showed active internet as it gave me results for google, yahoo, etc. Also, my ZoneAlarms in/out tray meter did show some activity. It seems as if maybe a port gets automatically closed? would that be right? stabin in the dark.

one more idea before the next round. did u try to empty the caches (regardless of browsers) and tried again when this happened?

    cheers ...

Yep, CCleaner and registry mechanic were the first things I did as soon as I noticed it. I also went and checked for any active, or overly active processes, no beans.

take a look at this and see how close (or far away) it is to the issue that u r having

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937168

my personal take, review the driver of ur ethernet and see if any updates are being made available, flush the dns when the issue occurs and try again

    cheers ...

And this happens on both a wired and wireless connection...

Well, I highly doubt any of the software on your computer would decide to close of port 80. I would be confortable ruling that out.

Hmm, that does look like it is it, but I am already up to date and found no other helpful information. The service it talks about is disabled and I am only behind a standard router, no issues before. I have even reverted to the old, standard lan driver. I initially updated it on this latest os reinstall, but I reverted right after having this issue.

    I have experienced this before...
    Try these options
    1. Try to disconnect and reconnect the lan cable.
    2. try to uninstall firefox, reboot and launch ie (conflict? i don't know really)
    3. sometimes a virus overloads your packets so, scan your computer.
    check using "Netstat -a"
    4. try: ipconfig /flushdns
    5. last resort: use the oldest restore point

Well, the latest info is that it is not a virus, spyware, or any other program on the computer. I have just finished extensive boot and safe mode scans. I also contacted windows for the hotfix, as it was unavailable on their site, but it states that this does not apply to me when I install it, since I am not sharing my connection. I even updated to Firefox 3 beta and still, every 45 minutes to 2 hours it cuts/freezes, then takes forever to shutdown. My next plan is to uninstall every piece of software I have changed from my original install list, as I have already reinstalled via safe mode my Ethernet drivers. It seems that I cannot get out unscathed with this darn computer, everything I try to do to make it faster, smoother, more efficient, I get trumped. Maybe yet another OS reinstall, I think that would be the 10th on the machine. I thought I was computer literate, I do some tech support on the side and have a couple classes under my belt, yet I just can't win, even tie.. Thank you for all your help, I am like a nagging thorn in your side...

Yep, I guess the conclusion to this is that I just reformatted my os partition and I am taking it slow updating the various drivers and utilities.

Latest update is that it is an SP 1 issue. The day after I installed SP 1 and my first boot up, 48 minutes in, the internet cut. I could still ping sites, but no HTTP was received through firefox/ie. This is a completely fresh install, the same on that a couple months ago worked perfectly, then I went and reinstalled. The only 'hack' of any sort, being RMCLOCK, is present for undervolting, which does not effect this issue if turned off. I sometimes regain the internet for 5 minutes after loosing it for some time. It is not heat as my temps are low to mid range and there is nothing else I have done that has changed the laptop at system level. I find this so very weird that ping via cmd works, but IE/FF does not. I am going to call Asus on Wed. when I am off and get their input, maybe they can shed some light. BTW, before installing SP1, I confirmed many 3 - 4 hour straight nights using internet...go figure.
