I just installed today and started playing around. Just curious to see if anyone else is trying this out yet.
So far the tabs work very well, but pages take longer than FF to render. The anti-phishing thing is interesting, I have it turned on but haven't caught any sites yet.
-
-
where did you get it?
-
Through MSDN, it's not public yet.
-
That's a shame. I was really looking forward to trying it.
Is it very customizable?
Improvement in load times (from ie 6)? -
I tried it out few months ago. Fast, stable, RSS, same search field and tabs like in Firefox, parts of url can be entered and it tries to retrieve the right url. Security is enhanced, popups and stuff are handled in better way. They say that still are working on good web app execution inside tabs (security and stuff). One button for go and stop (changes state). I didn't like the positions of bars at the top, some can be changed, some not. Tabs were on top of everything if I remember correctly.
Looks promising, but I uninstalled it because some sites were not working and now am waiting for beta2 (it was due in december). I'm currently on IE6 with msn search (tabs and stuff), and to be honest IE7 looks similar. I would only like RSS more.
Cheers, -
Sounds to me like an improvement over the last IE. Hey Brian, did you notice if the amount of spyware picked up by IE7 is less than the amount in the older version?
-
why not just stick with firefox
-
Well, I use FF and Opera, but we all need IE for MS software and such. Just curious if MS made their new browser resistant to spyware/adaware.
-
I'll probably switch to Internet Explorer 7 once it goes public. Firefox is too much of a resource hog and I can't stand it. I've been using IE6 more and more, recently. I still tend to click on the Firefox shortcut, but Internet Explorer seems faster. It certainly is more friendly with resources.

Well I had a different experience with IE 7 beta. I'm a big Firefox fan and I'm still kicking myself for even trying the beta version. I installed it and surfed around. Not bad and decent speeds, tab functions and stuff like that but then I went to a few sites that I knew used to have tons of popups and tracking stuff. Big mistake! About 5 minutes later I started getting popups on my desktop saying that my computer may have been hyjacked and may be ask risk and to disconnect from any network or internet connnection. It then installed a ballon that popped up on my tool bar and said to click here to take care of the problem. Like a dummy I did and then it took me to a website to install a program called "SpyAxe". Well when I ran Adaware and spybot SD, there was tons of tracking cookies and other garbage on my system. It took me about 5 hrs to find out a way to get rid of the spyaxe which turned out to be a major pain in the arse! You wouldn't believe the garbage it loaded on my machine and what I had to do to get rid of it. Everything from online scans from Trend Micro, Panda and Antivir. Then registry cleaner and then starting in safemode to remove rest. All of this for trying a the beta version of IE 7. By the way, this "SpyAxe" screws with your system restore even. You can't go back and just "undo" it. Now this is just my experience but it more than convinced me to never try IE again. And why I did in the first place I don't even know. I get about 2 tracking type of cookies a month if that using FF and Spyblaster combo and never anything like what I went through using IE 7 for 10 minutes. By the way, I was using AVG as my anti virus program at the time and it didn't catch or clean the SpyAxe. I have since switched to Kaspersky and that was just one of the programs that I had to use to clean and remove everything I picked up using the IE Beta. Just an FYI so be carefull.

I haven't gone to any shady sites yet, so I don't know how well the phishing tool works. I'm using it as my primary browser though and so far have been pleased. I'll probably stick with it and leave FireFox mainly because several web admin tools I use require IE.
-
I'm wanting to try it when it comes out. Might be hard to choose, either FireFox or IE7.
Is that the only thing you have dramatically noticed with IE7 over Firefox is that it's Admin features?
edit: Well differences being to normal internet browsing. -
Well, there are far fewer plugins for IE than FF. And as to admin, I mean website admin, not admin of the browsers.
-
Yeah i had known about what you meant and about the admin features for this site rather than of all websites.
But other than that, are there any other reasons that would make it better rather than FF for basic productivity? -
So far it's hard to tell, since this is still beta. I think the average web user will benefit from the phishing stuff and the tabbed concept, if they're not familiar, which most aren't.
-
I have read that the Beta AND the one that will be public will not stand up to the ACID II test that ie6 and FF follow...
-TBird -
can you actually download IE7?? Where from? I couldn't find it on the Windows website!
-
post some pictures of the new IE 7. i've seen some screenshots online and they actually looks pretty nice.
-
You cannot download it from a public Microsoft site. It is downloaded through Microsoft MSDN network for developers. Although there is still no BETA 2, I found this little pics site: http://www.jcxp.net/news.php?newsid=1070
I see they have changed it a bit in comparison to the BETA 1.
Cheers, -
We're going to do a writeup soon, full of images.
-
anyone know if IE7 will properly display PNG images? and the biggest reason I don't use firefox much is the lack of support for the buttons on my MX1000, anyone know if there is a plugin for that?
-
R u using beta 1 or 2?

I have noticed some flaws and bugs in ie 7 beta 2 but the more I run the browser, the problems seem to fix it self.
Any one else have similar incidents?
For instance, I had problems with the tool bar and the loading of my homepage but after a few shutdowns and restart the problem seem to resolve it self, I am wondering if it is getting fixed because I am doing the customer feedback on line and they reconize the problem and resolve it, or is it self learning for certain functions. All I know is the more I use the browser, the less the bugs seem. -
one more of the install

Just saw this today. IE 7 Beta 2 Public Preview. The article provides links for download.

During that IE7 speech during CES (I believe) it was pretty annoying watching MS claiming to have "invented" all these features and in the end they will receive all the credit as they're the mainstream in the public. I'd rather have them focus on making their browsing more compliant with web standards.
Such as:
Tabbed Browsing which was in Opera
Preview of Tabbed Pages which is almost a straight rip from Firefox. Here's a link to Viamatic foXpose, https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1457 -
I really like the quick tabs, although they're not "live" views yet.
As to taking credit, I didn't get that feel from them at all, although I think they feel like they made those features better. -
-
One thing of IE 7 that really bugs me is that the browse buttons are on top (rather than the File, Edit, View etc..). Does anyone know a way to change this? Pictures below further describe what I am talking about.
Oh, also how the 'Refresh' and 'Stop' buttons are way over near the edge. I would like them to be to the right of the 'back' and 'forward' buttons.
How it is
How I wish it was (not including the stop and refresh buttons)
Other than that, I am very satisfied with itMuch better than FF (IMO)
-
I downloaded and used it, but I'm sticking with Firefox. Why? One word.
Extensions.
I have a number of extensions (too lazy to count) and I love each and every one of them - in fact, they're the only reason I've not switched to Opera. I cannot do without Adblock Plus, NoScript, and FlashGot.
-
I didn't find any errors or bugs yet. It seems that IE7 is going to be much faster than ie6 on my machine.
I like the confirmation when you are about to close main window and it asks you about open tabs. Man, a few times I accidentaly closed my IE6 with MSN tabs and I was so sorry. Now it saves me from my accidents.
Cheers, -
Does IE7 allow me one to set a minimum font size like in Firefox? I'll make the switch to IE if so!
-
I'm about to try it, looks promising. I REALLY like ff's extension as well, but primarily use Opera... I just wish it had more of FF-like extension database.
-
Yup I hate that same issue with IE as the first post in this thread. I thought I couldnt move them because the toolbars were locked - turns out I was wrong.
Though overall its great how they improved all the functions. One thing I noticed if you try to FTP, it opens a new folder rather then in IE itself - not cool.
Im still sticking with firefox...Why? Its great, stable and using Firefox Preloader its fast. The extensions totally own aswell as the skins. Firefox does everything for me so why would I go back to IE7. And on right click in Firefox you can click "View This Page in IE" so if I ever need to go to IE, I am all set.
-
maybe they have not gotten around to putting the browsing buttons on toolbars that are movable yet?
-
It won't install on my desktop. It just tells me to read the log files in my root directory. Well, there are a lot of log files in my root and I don't feel like fishing through them just to figure this out.
Perhaps I'll try again when my new notebook arrives next week. -
I'm trying out the Beta 2 and it is pretty good. I don't understand what the "Phishing filter" is though. What is it?
-
-
Been tryin it out - so far
Likes
Seems clearer / sharper
Like the MultiTab browing
So far only one unexplainable freeze up crash
Does seem fast
I like the new interace in general
Dislikes
Does not play well with Oracle Forms / JSP apps and jinitiator (java error / crash) likley Oralce / MS will have a patch at some point. These two companies only play together because they have too -
My 2 cents, Beta 1 was much more stable and a better browser, while Beta 2 has added some design tweaks and interface updates that are pretty nice. Beta 2 cannot go to market as it though, still needs help.
-
Whoever mentioned that Firefox was a resource hog...
Heh... The barebones browser is only 9 megs total, I dont see how it's a resource hog, even compared to IE. Unless you add 20 billion plugins.
Anyhoo, from a web design perspective, it would be nice to see the new version of internet exploder actually conform to the industry standards for displaying CSS.
