    Hello Everyone,

I have Vista 64 bit SP1. I have automatic updates set to "download but let me choose whether to install"..it has promted me that 2 new downloads are ready and one is Internet Explorer 8. I do not want IE8. After doing some research, I see microsoft has a "IE8 automatic update blocker" I downloaded it to a folder on my desktop and ran it. Problem is it does nothing when i choose "run". It is just a few files sitting in a folder now on my desktop. Is my laptop not able to open this type of file to run this software? As it stands, every day automatic updates asks me if i want to install the update (IE8) and of course it is getting annoying. Any help? Thanks

I don't know why that tool is not running, but why don't you install IE8, and then uninstall it? And then, search for updates, and hide it. I think that'll work?

Though I hope someone has a better solution.

I run the program and it asks me where I want to extract the files to and I choose an empty folder on the desktop then the only .exe type file in the extracted folder is IE80Blocker.ADM and when I choose that it asks me if I want to use the web to open...If i choose yes this is what i get..

    File Type: Unknown

Description: Windows does not recognize this file type.

    !!???

If you haven't already figure the obvious thing out, critical updates are meant to be installed.

Also read what the download page says and it should explain everything in detail.

Why aren't you installing IE8? Just install it leave it alone if you don't want to use it. IE8 is not just a browser, it's also reponsible for for many network capabilities for programs such as windows live messenger ...etc.

adm is for domains only. it's a group policy file.

just install it, it's the best you can do for your system. stay up to date => stay secure.

if you don't want to use it, then don't use it.

Sorry but IE8 is not a "critical update" ;)

I set my automatic updates to download but ask for my approval to install. I do this bc not all updates are good nor "critical"

Dont use windows live/messanger..uninstalled that crappy bloatware as soon as I got the laptop :D

The other updates are Windows Malicious Software Removal tool x64 and Intel driver update for Intel WiFi link 5100 AGN. Are these good updates?

Any more help on why this IE8 Blocker will not run? :(

    Thanks

If you don't know how to use this, it's not for you.
If you don't know what the "blocker" thing is for, IE8 is most likely a critical update for you. Most most people, IE8 is definetly a critical update and you sound like you're one of these people.

just install all the updates and be happy. don't even bother to look close if it is useful to you. it may fix something tiny you only notice months later. it may just enhance a bit of performance.

always stay up to date. it makes your life much more easy.

and about wlm being bloatware, i'd say no. it may be useless for you, yes, but it's still not bloat. it doesn't slow down your system, is a snappy app by itself, doesn't hurt at all. (and other live apps that come with the same app are actual enhancements, like the live photo manager or how ever called is a good update to the original one on vista).

don't be that paranoid or picky about updating.

Thanks guys. Ur right I should not be so picky and should just trust that auto updates are good for me. I do just get paranoid about what is being installed on my PC esp if I donbt need it. Just clutter! But I understand I will drive myself crazy trying to decifer between whats good/not beneficial in updating. I will install the 3 updates. Just to make sure, IE8 will NOT be set as my default browser and can I just install it and then uninstall it? Or will auto update sense that and ask me to reinstall next time?

SO I guess my only question is...if I install IE8 via updates (but set it as NOT the default browser during setup) then can I immediately go in and "uninstall the IE8 update"??? Will automatic update then after find it again and see that I uninstalled it and see IE8 as an update and show it again in auto updates?

Schucks..Thanks...guess il just leave it in there then...

QUICK QUESTION: I have 4GIG DDR RAM..would i benefit from putting a minimum and maximum amount in my virtual memory?? IF so...what should the amounts be? Thanks! :p

someone said 2.5x actual RAM...so if thats correct set Maximum to 10,000? Then whats the minimum amount?

    Is even doing this beneficial?

I read under "tweaks to make vista faster" to leave that box unchecked for better performance?

    So checked or inchecked?

just leave it all as it is, and update what gets in as an update, and stop eating that much valium about what should help your system. your system is great and fast and can handle anything. tweaking won't help, and mostly will hurt.

microsoft knows best how to balance a paging file. and the paging file only gets used when needed => just let it be, and it won't hurt your performance anyways.
